Who here has owned one? I'm looking at a used one down in Cincinatti. Are they any good? Or do they suck? Would it be a better buy than a Forester with a blown head gasket? It's a 5sp with 4wd. Does that mean it's fwd unless switched? Or is it AWD with a locking diff?

I had a one as my first car, the turbo, oooooooo

anyway, great car. This is the last body style that had this engine format before switching to the "EJ" series that has been in pretty much everything subaru since then. They are strong and reliable, but the one linked appears to be a bit of a basket case with parts all over the place.

as for the fwd/awd. Mine was switchable with a button on the shifter, so it was FWD until activated AWD. I believe depending on the model it was a up to a 50/50 split of power, but I could be wrong on that. I also believe there were some that were FWD only and some that were full time 4wd.

I also hear tell that the 4wd/awd activation was vacuum operated and tended to fail over time as the hoses get worn. Replacing the hoses was the fix.

I love it, simple, big inside, still a small car outside.

I thought about the whole parts thing at first, thought it was junky, but it looks kinda clean on the inside. Hopefully it's not a pos. I really want it. Just wish it wasn't fwd. :/

I believe it is FWD with 4WD optional, button push.

and you're right, reading the ad again the only concern is the rust. looks like thye were proactively gathering extra parts, not necessarily that they needed them yet

With the 4wd on can it still turn and stuff? I know some cars are picky like that

yup, front diff is built into the transmission to allow front wheels to spin at different speeds, the centre diff is what is activated by the button and that allows the rear to spin at different speeds to the front, and the rear diff allows the rears to spin at different speeds.

When I activated 4wd in my subaru back in the day, it was noisier, is had less power/speed, but certainly no issues. I never hesitated to use it on the highway. Just, using caution, only switched between modes when stationary so things weren't spinning when attempting to engage

Ok that's cool! Even better I found a Turbo model parts car nearby. Were any of them full time AWD?

I believe yes, but not 100%. the give away will be an AWD sticker, and if you look underneath a rear diff and driveshaft, but no push button on the gear stick.
