Not sure what to do, or why I would think you you all might have some insight into this but i am giving my wife a trip to New York with her sisters for Valentines day and because I feel like this is just a tiny packback for all the cool trips I've done this year without here, I am not counting it as part of her birthday just 5 days later. So the question I keep asking myself is. $200 on a down coat? or $200 on a new camera? She says she needs a new down coat but that hers functions fine. She doesn't like my Mirrorless camera because its too big and complicated and the one I gave her years ago takes crappy pics. She is very, um, frugal and her idea of a great gift is tupperware or some nonsense like that. But I need to get this ordered soon so she can take one on her trip. New York is going to be butt cold so...down? but she will want to take good pictures of this trip with her sisters who are on opposite sides of the country...and she has a puffy coat so...camera? Thoughts?

1. not really, I want to get her quality stuff and Puffy coats or nice cameras aren't cheap. $200 is pretty low for either.

2. um, yeah. totally hot for a 79 quad with the V8

I'd go with the camera. If she's frugal like you say, I'd guess that she's more interested in functionality and utility than anything else. If that's true, then she'll get herself a new jacket when the time comes, but as long as the one she has works okay, she'll stick with it until it dies. On the other hand, from what you say, the camera she has doesn't work all that well.

If you know exactly which model of camera she actually wants, buy the camera. No questions asked.

If you're not sure, or if she's being cagey about it, give her a gift certificate to a store in New York. It can even be a hand-written gift: "This card entitles the bearer to $200 off any splurge purchase in New York, as long as the purchase is a camera or a down coat." Or something like that.

But don't buy her a coat - she going to New York and the shopping risks being quite good...

she could care less about the camera model, so long as it does the job. As for the coat...good luck getting a decent down coat deal just walking into a store, the 200 budget I have is looking at coats that are already 35% or more off. Down coats are stupid expensive if you dont want to settle for cheap stuff.

I'd say get her the camera, NY isn't going to be that cold. I've only needed to throw on thermals a couple of times this year.
