Just wait.

Just wait until Australia and there's a grid full of these things lined-up at full song waiting for the lights to go out.

Hearing these creations whooshing and chirping and cracking and sneezing and snarling to be let loose. It's going to be Epic. Off-the-chart awesome.
Imagine a hand-full of Group B's bouncing off their limiters, sucking down air like it's going out of fashion. It'll be along those lines. I'll tell you one thing you won't see ether - the teams not wearing earmuffs.

Kinja'd!!!

It's not a singing contest and these aren't just some neutered vacuum cleaners.

These are turbocharged 1.6L V6 engines that spin to 15000 RPM and produce around 600 HP assisted by not one but two electrical systems that top that HP figure (160HP) nicely.

Ok, I get it. Some of the magic has gone with the drop in the red-line. But it's been replaced by something else - Sorcery. And we've got a whole season of it to look forward to.

We have McLaren professionally rule-bending, we have drama in the engine bays, we have controversial design.

We have controversial rules, we have champions, we have rookies.

We have turbos, we have MGU-K and MGH-H, we have, uh, new acronyms to learn.

We have racing.

We have F1

And I for one cannot wait.

I'm thoroughly contemplating turning his launch into a ringtone.

The McLaren MP4/4 that won McLaren its dominant world championship and Senna his had an engine that

Was a 1.5L 80 degree V6 Twin turbo

Revved 'only' upto 14,000 rpm

Produced 675 hp (503 kW) at 12500 rpm in qualifying

Had a fuel limit of 150l per race

Nobody complained about the noise from that car :)

Also, this doesn't sound too bad. Is it as loud as the V10s? No. But it isn't running at full chat either here. Would I prefer to bring back the V10/V12s? Answer - DAT Lambo V12 (insert simpsons drooling picture). But will the new engines sound bad? Don't think so.

Exactly my thoughts, man. No one ever complains about the old turbo days. Give it a couple of years. We'll love them

Also thanks for the technical on the old Mclaren, I didn't know any of that!

A little article on it on McLaren's website - http://www.mclaren.com/formula1/herit…

Mentions fuel and boost limits.

I don't think the noise is an issue here. Maybe the V8s got 120dBnoise within 2 meters (my guess and not relevant here) from the exhaust and these new ones might do 118dB. Still plenty of noise and should be entertaining (and maybe painful) to hear.

But the '14 F1s look really silly. I have been thinking that they very silly looking when the wide front wings and narrow rear wings came. When I saw the Caterham's front end I really had to control myself not to giggle in the office.

The looks of a race car isn't very important (if it is fast) but it is still weird that they were able to make them look so silly. Not they look like a fast clown cars with million euro stickers on them.

I wonder if Play-Doh has noticed a nice change to became a motorsport sponsor...

Compare and contrast: Here's a short clip of a couple of turbo-era cars on track at the same time as one of the better-sounding ones of the 3.5L NA era. For my money the V12 wins, but the turbo doesn't exactly sound shit.
