"What do you mean take it for a spin?"

I was cautious as I accepted this request, for starters I hadn't visited New Delhi in 7 years and I mean, it was a $300k Lamborghini.

"I have a bit of work to do, go for a drive, hang out, have fun."

I've never been more stressed in my life.

Disclaimer: I have an obscenely wealthy childhood friend who now lives in India. Deal with it. EDIT: I took a bunch of photos of his cars, but since there are maybe 4 Murcielagos in New Delhi, I used stock photos to protect his identity.

Kinja'd!!!

If you never driven in a city before, there's two things you need to know: it sucks and you're bound to crash. At least in LA or NYC there are highways and open roads when you get OUT of the city. But when you're in India, there is traffic, and then some more traffic, and then finally when you're out of the city the roads are so bad that you might as well be in traffic. Sure there is the National Highway, and for portions it's a great road but then you'll see a pothole the size of a Polo and you realize, well yes, this is still India.

Still, while I see Lamborghinis daily, a rarely have chances to drive one, so I wasn't going to say no. This was probably the best Murcielago made too, LP670-4 SV with a 6 speed, none of that garbage flappy paddle stuff. An honest to good gated shifter and a clutch pedal, I was happy, happy, happy. Drove it out his house, got on the road and holy crap I was at 60 km/h before I realized what I was doing and BRAKE! Holy shit there's a Scooter merging in front of me! Pay more attention man, this is an expensive car.

I change lanes, err what I think are lanes because the lines drawn on the ground are just suggestions, you make your own lanes and rules. Ok, so I get a nice spot of road, drive like an Indian and gun it and merge back in front of those AutoRikshahs, ok...go for it! Got for it! Go for it! BRAKE! OMG THERE'S A CAR IN MY LANE DRIVING AT ME! This is a boulevard type road, meaning there are two separate sides. Why? Why?! Is there a car going the wrong way on the boulevard? And now he's yelling at me. Oh jeez, I need a stiff drink.

So I take a U-Turn and I drive towards The Imperial Hotel, somewhere where at least the Murcielago will feel at home among the Bentleys, Ferraris, and other high end cars. I drove the car 20km/h the entire way. I was too scared of anything happening to it to even enjoy the drive. I got to the hotel, had my drink and called my friend to pick me up, he sent a driver and drove me home.

When discussing the ride, he wasn't surprised when I told him how terrible a time I had. He told me that three times a year he ships one of his cars to Europe and drives it cross-continent to actually enjoy it. Kind of makes sense why all those Sheikhs and their children bring their cars to London every summer. And then he offered me something a little more fun...and a little more American:

Kinja'd!!!

You see them clogged up on the highways in the US everywhere you go and they don't look so exciting. But a pair of $40k each (after customs and taxes) Harley-Davidson Superglides are about as common as a Veyron in India. And seriously, it was the most fun ride I've had in a long time. Easily could go 70-100km/h in the side roads and byways and the sound! The glorious sound of an American V-Twin! In the US, when infested with obese geriatrics, they're just annoying but here I started to see why they love them so much.

Just one piece of advice, Harleys are heavy and you drop it don't pick it up from the right side, your hands won't be happy.

I always kind of wonder why some country's citizens don't follow the rules well. It's kind of sad. If people followed the rules, not only would driving be more enjoyable in those places, it'd be much safer. It makes me happy that I drive in the US with my speed limits and all.

I hope it gets better for you in India because you have the Tata corporation in charge of some of the best cars in the world! I bet your pollution you must smell there from exhaust is horrible.

I speak as a person of Indian origin: everyone in India wants to be ahead of everyone else (not just in traffic). The result? Everyone gets stuck. Part of living in a society is that you learn to sometimes give up your right to be first so everyone makes decent time. Not so in India.

I often work with software developers from India and 3 years ago when we were finishin a large project I flew to Pune for 2 weeks every month. I don't get it. I don't get it how people can drive in big cities over there. I drove in China (Hefei), I drove in Malaysia (Petaling Jaya), I drove in Manilla, I even drove in the shady parts of Johanessburg where you are instructed to NOT stop at red lights and no matter what to not drive with your window open and having a shiny watch on your wrist... I never, ever, had the tiniest balls to drive in big indian city. And I never will.

I can't read or even have my eyes closed in a moving vehicle or I get carsick, but in India I just close my eyes and just shut down my brain and wait till the driver starts his sweettalk to rip me off even though he drives me the same route every day and everyday we end up at the same price :). If someone was offering me an Aventador with Scarlett Johanson washing the car naked every morning, but to keep it I would have to drive across 2 junctions in India I would pass.

We can appreciate the author for sharing this with us, but the Jalop editors do hold some blame considering they're the ones sharing this to the front page. If something is going to be shared - and when I click on an article on my RSS feed, I'm just assuming it's from a professional writer - then it should be worthy be being shared and be representative of the professional writing normally on Jalopnik because it very much is representative of the site and its own writers.

But when I made the U-Turn I basically just did what everyone else does, just do it. Didn't care about the traffic or anything. I think it helped that everyone stopped to stare at the brightly colored lamborghini in the road.

That's not necessarily the lesson here.

I opened this article from Jalopnik 's RSS feed. It's not strange that I would have expected to read an article from Jalopnik from their news feed...

I read Oppo and if I read it, I'll intentionally open my bookmark to the page. I love Oppo and regardless of where an article's writing comes from, it's not a good thing if it hurts my brain to read.

The lesson here is that Jalop editors should have more discretion in choosing articles. If they liked this article so much - and I understand why - then they should have waited until the article was edited or they could have reached out to the author to edit it. Like I said, this affects their own reputation. You really think EVERY Jalop reader knows what the hell Oppo is? There's so many blogs and sub-blogs on Gawker that it's easy to just ignore the source or mix up the "professional" ones versus the user-created ones.

It's ok. The poverty disparity is very large yes, but it's not something we're going to solve anytime soon. There are so many people that many of them are bound to be exceedingly wealthy (or else the country would never have prospered) and many of them are bound to be dirt poor.

I wish no one was that poor, but there are SO MANY poor that the types of social programs that help with the inequality in the US simply would not be enough in India. It's going to take a long time and LOT of reform for there to be any change, but that isn't going to be easy.

I thought the World SBK was holding a race there? I could be wrong though. My Wife's family lives in Agra, so I've driven past the Buddh International Circuit more times than I can count.

Last time I was in Gurgaon, I saw a Ferrari 430. Then I thought to myself.....who the hell in their right mind would drive that in Gurgaon/Delhi??????? Pot holes everywhere, accidents are common, exchanging insurance information is a myth...... You have to be extremely wealthy to even consider driving/owning one of those cars there.

I was merely told no one drives their exotics there. I'm assuming it must not be good, because there isn't the word "no" for people with money in India so it's not like they're refused entry.

Hmm, probably because they can't make it out of Delhi traffic without someone scraping up their car. It's amazing more cars are not banged up there, they all are barely inches away and then some bike or small car creates a new lane from nowhere.

Just a quick note, it's Sikh. not sheikh. Not sure if it was grammar and spelling or an honest mistake. But I'm not going to give you more crap about that. I've been to india plenty of times, and if you can drive there, you can drive almost anyways in the world. I would go as far as saying that place is even worse then Russia for driving. Cow carts, those little 3 wheeled taxis, pedestrians, etc. all on the same road. But once you get out on the cities, it's pretty good, as long as the roads are paved, and not dirt roads. It's a mix of dirt and mostly paved roads where my dad lives. I actually learned how to drive stick shift on a road out on a lonely road in the pinds.

You can get out of anything with enough cash, as long as its minor in India. So I wouldn't be surprised at all if this is true. The cops do enforce seat belts there too, but you just hold it by your side as long as your going along and let go when you pass. AND WHAT IN THE HELL WOULD UNSAFE DRIVING BE? everything about driving there is unsafe. lol

No no I wasn't talking about the religion. As a fellow Punjabi myself, I'd like to think I know the difference between Arabian Sheikhs and my brothers :)

So it was just spelling? lol. Sorry for the rant but personally I hate being called a muslim, or arabian, not because I hate them, but because the people who do normally associate that with terrorism, even though there is very little relation. That usually leads to them calling me a terrorist. Ignorance at its finest. It's all because of 9/11. The way the media portrayed it, and future events that followed led to everybody making the assumption the middle east is a dangerous and evil place. It isn't. The idiots and racists in America made it worst. I've gotten quite a bit of crap about being brown, and I believe we became more... Not hated, but...segregated.... because of 9/11 and media portrayal.

Nah it was a reference as to why all the sheikhs and their kids go to european countries all summer and drive their expensive cars because arabian roads are no better than indian roads.

And yes, people are ignorant, nothing you can do about it really.

Please know that there are Americans who know the difference. There are a ton of ignorant racists here, sure. But those of us who aren't ignorant racists are trying to make things better, even if just by setting a good example.

No I agree, I'm an american and I try to set a good example, and most people aren't Racist, and try not to set a bad example for future generations. But because of past generations, and portrayals of middle eastern people, there is a lot of hate towards anybody who is brown. It's a lot better recently, but it's still there.

You didn't put a period at the end of your sentence. Your grammar and spelling is horrible.
