It's in the eye of the beholder. I think it still looks great. And you can see how companies such as Mercedes, Lexus, Infinity, Opel, Hyundai, Kia and many more have taken design cues from this and other BMWs of the same era.

And I think most Mercedes, Lexus, Infinity's and the rest are ugly. They may have copied bangle and shoved his designs down our throats but I refuse to believe or accept that is a good thing. Bangle's designs were terrible, and at the minimum you would have to admit that they are less attractive than the previous generation. If you can't agree with that, then I feel bad for you and your poor taste. If a new model is less attractive than the outgoing one then it is a failure. The Bangle designs were all massive failures by this criteria.

I admit that was a hard pill to swallow for me. However as a car it was fantastic and the interior was great, so was the technology (iDrive included).

I always found the E60 to be one of the prettier BMWs from that era. I don't know how it's unconventional when today, many cars still try to mimic its styling techniques. Even the latest 5er looks horrendous compared to this.

iDrive was sorted with the current generation of cars. In this it was better, because it was not doing things that it did in the other more sporty cars.

Now this one.... I hated what Bangle did to the 7-series, and wasn't a big fan of this either when it came out, but the E60 seems to be getting better with age. Might be a future classic, especially as the model bloat continues. Still doesn't have shit on the E39, though.

To be honest, the E39 only started growing on me once the facelift came out. We had both E39's in my family. 1998 model in blue with grey leather seats, just like the one on your picture. As a kid I never build up a relationship with that car, especially as it replaced our beloved E32 740i. The facelifted 2001 one version we had afterwards changed everything however. Better motorization, nicer interior. Same color outside but I lobbied my father to go with beige leather. And of course it had the beautiful angel eyes. I remember that car very fondly!
