How much do you think a fan speed button for an E39 BMW costs? $5? $7? Nope. Answer after the jump.
It costs !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , according to eBay.

Less than I was expecting. I had my expectations at $35

I'll 3D print one for you. It will cost some 39¢.

My guess was about $50

I'd say I'm surprised, but we're talking about a BMW here.
![]() 12/31/2014 at 15:57 |

Yes but we're talking about a piece of plastic no larger than an inch long. It shouldn't even be $10.
![]() 12/31/2014 at 15:57 |

That would be very overpriced.

I paid $130 for the plastic switch that adjusts the Citroens's driver's seat lumbar.

Okay let me whip out the 3D scanner I have just lying around and I'll send you a file.

Plastic injection molds are really expensive. Totally.

Just a tad.
![]() 12/31/2014 at 16:02 |

Just $30 too much for one.

Same with silk screening equipment. It just costs so much to stamp that little graphic on there.

I think that's your own damn fault for buying a Citroen.

You haven't seen how much a new OEM radio for a toyota echo is. Radio and CD player, 1 disc, no stabilization. Take a guess.
![]() 12/31/2014 at 16:08 |
|
I dunno but OEM radios are always a lot. A used radio for my old Metro was like $80.

If possible, you could just pull the whole unit out of one at a junkyard, yes?
![]() 12/31/2014 at 16:21 |

I'm on an island with no junkyards.
![]() 12/31/2014 at 16:29 |

Wait till you see how much it costs to ship it!

I was thinking $55 to $65 it a BMW
![]() 12/31/2014 at 16:46 |

$250. I kid you not.

Crikey. And I thought $36 for a new power door lock switch for my Civic was bad. (I didn't buy it - it forces me to be chivalrous and open the door manually for my wife).

Heck, even a few decent photographs with a ruler might be enough to model one up.
![]() 12/31/2014 at 17:20 |

So am I, but if I needed parts, there are a couple out on Long Island. And Jersey? Lots of junkyards. That used to be my favorite thing when I owned old Volvos. Finding that perfect window regulator or distributor cap felt like such a win.

Reminds me of my heat control switches for the cavalier. $350....for some switches.
filed that to stealerships.

No I mean an actual island, not Manhattan. There's an $80 ferry ticket and at least an hours drive separating me from any junkyards.
![]() 12/31/2014 at 19:04 |
|
Oh, we are an actual island, just really close to lots of other places. Bridge or tunnel - only way to get here.
![]() 12/31/2014 at 19:22 |

how much from BMW?
![]() 12/31/2014 at 20:24 |
|
Exactly. You can just drive over for $8. The only way for me to get to a junkyard is to spend $80 (one way), negating any savings I would have made by going to a junkyard in the first place.

If private sellers are this much I don't want to know.
![]() 12/31/2014 at 21:06 |

This is why I am pathetic ... about a week after a rental, the EasyPass charges for bridges/tunnels hit my debit card. This includes the DE Memorial Bridge (if I'm headed down to DC). And it includes the NJ Turnpike, and countless other charges. And I never question it.

i've been finding recently that eBay isn't as cheap as it use to be.
so you might be surprised when you call your local BMW agent
![]() 12/31/2014 at 22:55 |

There is no local BMW agent. I'm on an island.

ring or email a few dealers.

That's nothing. There is a little round black plastic disc on the front bumper of my Mazda5 that covers up the socket for the tow hook. I shall repeat that - Round. Plastic. Disc. Like you, I predicted $5-7. Cost at a dealer? $37.
I can't justify spending that to cover up a little hole, but I couldn't stand looking at the white foam bumper insert. Solution? A shot of black spray paint. Someday one of these will be in my local junkyard and I should be able to pick it up for the expected 72 cents. This would be the perfect part to reproduce in a 3D printer, but I haven't bought one of those yet.
