I'm guessing, prior to the rise of self-service, that that would be a spring-loaded solenoid latched gas cap - push button, cap pops open for the attendant. "OVER HERE, FOOL. I THIRST." Doubles as a gas-siphon prevention device just like lock latches on the gas doors today.
Nifty idea as long as it doesn't develop a short. :X

I love the immediate pre and post war Nashes. The Ambassador was a seriously overbuilt car, too. A self-supporting unibody bolted onto a full chassis frame, rather like the later Crown Victorias.
