I currently have a EV plug in my garage for my future Tesla that's wired for 50amp (Nema 14-50).
Right now this plug isn't being used. My garage is fully insulated but not heated. I'm wanting to put a 30amp portable construction heater in there.
Can just use an adapter to go from 50amp to 30amp Nema 14-50 to nema 6-30? (pictured is 14-50 to 11-30 but you get the idea)
I'f I do this will it only send 30amp to the heater or will it send the full 50amp to the heater? I don't want to do anything dangerous.

why so sad? :]

The 50 amp is just the capacity of the outlet / wiring. You should be fine with the adapter, so long as the gauge is big enough

I'm not sure I understand can you elaborate a bit more?

The amps are the capacity. If the outlet has 50 available, but your heater only uses 30, there will be 20 amps of additional load that can be put on.

Averyrm is correct, as long as your adapter is rated for 30 amps, you will be fine.

The outlet can supply UP TO 50 amps.
The appliance will only use as much as it needs.

No problem. I had the same conversation with my dad about my computer.
Dad: How big's the power supply in your computer?
Me: 750 watts.
Dad: Christ, that's going to drive up your power bill.
Me: It doesn't use 750 watts all the time! A lot of the time it's under 150 watts of draw at the wall. It just means it CAN pull 750 watts.

Why, sure dad, I definitely won't be running any loads on my computer anywhere near that. I don't do any fancy gaming at all, even.

I own my own house, I pay my own electric bill. So I don't even know what the issue is.

There isn't an issue about the power used, it's just messing with you about the common "understate how serious one's hobby is" syndrome. "I have X, but I only use if for Y and Z, never Omega". That sort of thing. Like saying one's car's top speed isn't relevant.

Oh. I never understated the hobby. When you have three screens on a desk mount (my old PC), you can't really claim it's just for word processing and Facebook.

I know somebody who was three-screened on a desk mount, but in finance, at work. Home use of three screens for anything but games... less prevalent.

I'm a broke-ass bastard, I'm not playin' the stock market

You should rob a bank, play the stock market with that, and then give the money back and keep the profits. Totes a victimless crime. Totes.

I don't think that would work... Would that work?

It's for me to suggest and you to find out. I'm only charging 2% on the returns for providing you this excellent idea.

I've beaten all the heist missions on GTA5, so I think I got this.

...and by the GTA percentage rules, I'm cheap. I'm not like Lester at all.

Gonna need to see your stat bars

They're crap, but at 2%, can you afford *not* to use me?

Actually, yes.
I always took the people with the best skills, with one exception: the hacker from LifeInvader.
