Since driving the Jaaag with me to France and back, my GF has been looking for something cool and boxy (and a bit quicker) to replace her 1.0l Vauxhall Corsa. First on the list is !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! that she's fallen in love with. Does anyone have any experience of E28s?

Do eeet! That's very clean, from what I gather with the pictures...
What is the MOT that the ad refers to?

Stick to the Corsa, an older BMW will cripple her financially. Having said that, a petrol one like that is a better bet than a diesel. Cheaper to buy and more reliable.

Annual test.

State inspection basically, just way way more anal.

How so cripple financially? Fuel's a given, although it shouldn't be too much more given that it'll be part-shared with a diesel Citroen BX that should be more efficient to run than the Corsa.
Tyres are one, but that's a job for a year from now. Other than that, what is there to expect? It's not as if Corsas are the pinnacle of reliability...

It's a mechanical inspection that you have to pass to have your car on the road. Things like rust near suspension, tyre tread, all lights, emissions etc.
It does look very, very clean. Cambelt's been done recently too, which is the big thing to look for I gather.

Running costs. A Corsa might not the ultimate in reliability but at least parts aren't that expensive. I've known people with BMWs and they said never again. Having said that I used to have a 320i which wasn't particularly troublesome except for an ignition problem which no one ever got to the bottom of.

I'd rock it, but in that price range, go for this:

Ah! Thank you for the education. Yes, I experienced something similar to that when I was living in New Jersey. Oddly, California (well known for its regulations) only checks smog...

Weird :S so you can have an absolutely clapped out rustbucket but so long as it's emissions-friendly they're fine?

Ooh that does look nice, but she's not a fan of curvy modern (or 60s) styling. Definitely a clean-cut box fan :)

Yeah I had an E36 325i that had only a minor ignition problem (bolt missing from injector plug rail so the no.6 cylinder every now and again would misfire, easy easy fix). Not as bad as people think :)

Disregard E28, acquire E34

good lord is that a gorgeous e28

The E28 is very nice and simple enough to work on.
I assume you're a fan of her clean-cut box *rimshot* [ Sorry, I'm a dirty old man. ]

Heh :) that I am ;)

It really, really is. She's getting cold feet now so it might not go ahead, but it's such a lovely lovely car.
If I had the money myself I'd buy it, repair what little there is to fix, drive it for a month then sell it for £3000 :)

I would do, but shark-nose...

don't hesitate.....do it now. Life is far too short to drive boring cars :)

That's my philosophy :) the GF has got cold feet now, but I'm tempted to do it myself...

Fair enough. I never really think of the E28 as a sharknose because here in the US we got those heinous diving board bumpers, ruining that look

Good point. They're much better in Euro-guise :)

As far as California DMV is concerned, yes. Local PD may take issue, but they seem to be fairly lax, judging by some of the cars I've seen on the road...
