I've been waiting for this to come in the mail, and now I have to tackle the job this weekend.
Wish me luck!
4 idlers, tensioner, water pump, and timing belt.

I'm considering a Forester for my next car. How bad is that job to do at home?

Book time is 2.5-3.5 hours. It'll probably take me 5. Its pretty straight forward

Do you have to pull the motor to do it?

you don't even need to take the radiator out, gives you a little more space but it's not necessary.

I did it with the radiator in, and with it out. Felt it was worth the time to take it out. you have to empty it already since you are doing water pump (good time to throw a few dollars at a thermostat too).

do tensioners really fail so ofen that they need to be replaced with the timing belt?

Yep I'm taking the whole front clip off, just easier that way.

My tensioner actually didn't fail. One of the idlers bearings went bad and are squealing, figured I might as well do everything under the cover, only cost me 200 and some change to get all the parts.

normally idlers & tensioner are all right on those , we rarely replace water pumps , how many miles/km's?
what year is yours?

2006 with 130k miles.

even with that mileage strange it needs water pump / tensioner /idlers.
have seen them get to 200k miles without needing replacements
but engine parts can be a lottery at times.

It's supposed to be done at 100k.
