It's a long story but I had to get my car appraised today for tax reasons (my father knows a helluva lot more about it than me).
I last got it appraised last January w/ 63K for $10,000.
Since then, I:
- Now have 81K (I've driven a lot this year)
- Lowered It
- New 3" FMIC
- New Downpipe
- Reworked the suspension
- Custom Tune
As well as other stuff that'd also decrease the value.
My Carmax Offer: $6,000.
What has Carmax Offered You?

They offered me $7k for my '08 civic LX with 65k miles. The dealer I traded it to was at $7200 and I thought they could do better. Carmax proved me wrong

Carmax offered me about tree-fiddy.

"As well as other stuff that'd also decrease the value."
FTFY...
For tax purposes, do you want the lowest or highest valuation you can get?

Back in Murdaland. I went to the non-dealer/appraisal only location in Timonium, MD.

Nice and low. So it worked in my favor. However, I was still slightly insulted.

Still in CT for the most part. I'm a student so I'm home for the holidays.

Do you have an equivalent of webuyanycar.com in the US? Call them and you can feel properly insulted. My favourite was when I called them and they said 'Hello, webuyanycar.com, how may I help you? [...] No, we won't buy that .'

Bought it for $1,000 from Craigslist with 90k miles on the clock. Here's what happened during my ownership.:
- Drove it 11k.
- Front brakes worn and warped (thank you Arlington Heights Ford).
- Parking brake ruined (thank you Arlington Heights Ford).
- Both front wheel bearings trashed.
- Alternator belt incorrectly installed.
- Spread of body rust to jacking points.
- Unstable electrical system.
- CEL on for the Parking shift lock (bought it like that).
I think that covers most of the car's issues. CarMax bought it for $700. Treated the car like a rental, only lost $300. :)

CarMax offered me $1700 for my '99 Grand Cherokee that I ended up getting $3k for from another dealer.

'97 Taurus SHO (July 2001) 98xxx miles. Very good condition, Had been listed at $9,900 (BB $10,200, I think) for a couple weeks, no bites. Lowered to $8,900 for week, nothing. I had a job starting in NYC, so I went to CarMax in Rockville, MD, and the offer was $7,400, which I took. I think that car's problem was the cloth interior, which I like a lot - the fanboys wanted leather. Otherwise mechanically sound, I hope someone wound up with it who appreciated it for what it was. They wholesaled it, I'm sure.

When I worked at Carmax, $300 was the lowest we'd usually give. I had a guy come in with a 1996 Camry with 452,000 Miles , and we gave him $1000. It was in good enough shape that it would be great to showcase at a Toyota Dealer to show their durability.
The guy was about to sell it, but backed out because he was attached to the car - who could blame him. He owned it since I think 20,000 miles.

You may need to get that checked...

Whoops, that was an error. They bought it for $700, and since I bought it for $1,000; only $300 was lost.
The last 400k Camry I've seen had its bonnet literally bolted and welded shut. Not sure how that guy ever did any maintenance on the thing...

An E30. Technically, I think if I'd insisted they would have made me a token offer of £1 or something, to meet their advertising claims, but at the time there was no price at all in their system.

That means it's working...

Yessir. There's another SR in Hamden - it's a 2007 SR M66 Sappicama. I followed it from auction all the way to it's new owner. He treats it like shit!
