I went from thinking I was going to change a leaky water pump, to checking my fluids and finding I need a new head gasket. Here is my engine as it sits at the moment. I also found I need a new steering pump. Surprisingly enough, the bolts in the airbox have been the only ones that were seized solid. They broke :-( but the manifolds came off relatively easy. How was everyone else's weekend? Also guess the car, haha...

This is the evo right?

I am bad at sarcasm on the internet. You are joking right? Look at that valvetrain. Also I don't have an evo.

Jeep?
And my weekend wasn't nearly as exciting, just an office Christmas party.

You poor soul.
I replaced a shift solenoid on an XJ this weekend.

yup.

sounds fun. I have to fix my neutral position sensor at some point, that's easy though. How is the shift solenoid to replace?

I thought you said you have one the other day in cah. I didn't really look close enough to realize that this was an inline 6 (right? please tell me I'm right?). Sorry. It's early in the morning.

Pretty easy, drain trans, drop pan, right there, one bolt holds it in, we had planned to change the trans filter as well, but the hillbilly exhaust wouldn't let me drop the pan more than a few inches.

I've never played CAH on here. Work doesn't allow it :-( Perhaps I have an imposter. Yes, it is an inline 6.

....Maybe I should just sleep more since I seem to have everything all backwards.

Pretty sure it's a Lambo, bro.

Yeah yeah. I'm not very bright early in the morning....be quiet.

But do all the pixels work?

Nope. Only about half.

Looks more productive than mine. All that I wanted to do was install a rear ARB on my AW11. Turns out that the bolts in the spot where it mounts have become part of the frame in the last 25 years, so what should have been a quick job turned into a no-progress job. I have them soaking in WD40 for now. I'll try again later.

I would suggest getting a real penetrating oil. (PB blaster, Kroil, or the WD-40 specialist stuff) Ever try using heat for bolts like that? If the penetrating oil doesnt work, I suggest heating them up really hot. The expanding metal tends to break free of the rust.

I looked at my car, thought about everything I need to do to it, then did nothing at all because it was raining. Not having a garage sucks ballz.

I know it. I am borrowing a garage for this project.

I never tried using heat to get a stuck bolt out before. That's a good idea. How hot do I need to get it? Think that a few minutes with a heat gun would get the job done, or should I torch it?

Definitely use a torch if you can. I usually use a Mapp gas torch. Propane would work too. I mean get it just shy of glowing if it is really bad. (as long as it is safe to do so in that area of the car. If not, just get them pretty hot. Also, if it is a suspension component, I would recommend replacing bolts that you get that hot.

Got a good friend, eh?
I'm hoping to do the same one of these days. Also for a head gasket replacement!

parents. What kind of car is it on?
![]() 12/15/2014 at 08:50 |

Oh yeah, all of the original bolts are being replaced. Where it's at is in a pretty out of the way spot, so I should be able to get the heat up pretty high. Thanks!

heat gun wont do anything, propane doesnt even really work, MAPP gas is probably the least you can use on a stuck bolt.

DOHC inline 5? With turbo manifolds to deal with? That sounds worse than mine. Good luck man.

Yeah. Specially considering I don't really have enough cool friends/parents willing to lend/rent me an enclosed space to work, nor can I afford the labour rates involved in doing the whole work + parts if I take it to a shop. So it isn't looking very good for me at the moment!
I look at the engine in my N/A hatchback and think I could probably have the head out in 5 minutes by the roadside with nothing but a screwdriver and a hammer. Owning an old/complex car without a private garage is a no-no for sure. Lesson learnt!

Try some ATF! Mattbob has some good suggestions. I like PB myself. But I've always heard of using ATF for really stubborn bolts.
