It was difficult to work out all of the contractual issues because Jenson truly is the hardest Button to button.

I'm sure Jenson's previous relationships with Honda played a part in this decision.

Pretty much, but almost Ron Dennis wanted otherwise, for some reasons.

Magnussen definitely shows promise for the future, it's a good reason to keep him. That said, I like Jenson and am happy to see that he'll have a seat on the grid next year.

To be perfectly honest, I'm not entirely convinced Jenson was either. There's no denying he sort of lucked into a dominant car in 2009 and just did better with it than Barichello. I'm not trying to downplay Button's skills as a racing driver, his consistency and clean driving style played a large part, but the car was the deciding factor in that year's championship.
Coming back to Magnussen, he's looked to be comparable in speed to JB in his first year in the sport. He showed good management of his tires during racing stints and fought some good battles on track. Unfortunately, a couple of overzealous/aggressive driving maneuvers earned him a few penalties (though on at least 1 occasion I thought a penalty was undeserved), which really hampered his points total this year and gave Button a big edge in the standings. This is something I think he can and will improve on when given more time in the sport.
Future champion? I don't know. McLaren will have to get back to building competitive cars to really answer that question.
