Because I kind of want to buy a Hummer H2...
I understand, these are obviously not the pinnacle of off road ability. But for, as far as I understand, a Suburban with a cool looking body, I'm totally down. As another plus, they're cheap as dirt on ebay. As long as they have a halfway okay towing rating, I'm seriously considering one.

Didn't really factor gas in too much because I fully expect it to rise again before long and this would in no way replace my GTI as a daily driver. Just an interesting tow vehicle that I could run down easy trail for car camping. To be honest I think buying one of these or any truck for that matter and complaining about gas mileage is kind of ridiculous.

they are kind of cool in my book. You might look like a dbag but as long as you are happy with that cool. Can you please find one with aftermarket rims though, the fake central tire inflator detail on the OE hubcaps bothers the everloving shit out of me. Kind of like the fake fender vents on other cars. Save it for when its real

we americans are horribly near-sighted. prices of these things on the used-market fluctuate when gas prices move a quarter.
so... mouse: better get one quick before the prices bounce back up!

Have a mechanic check out the front suspension components. They have a history of crapping out under this vehicles girth. I've also seen lots with severe rust on the spare tire swing arm, but that should be fairly obvious to spot.

Finding one with aftermarket wheels that are 22" or spinners might be a challenge. I have a hunch that a lot of these have been pretty well douched up.

I think if I were to buy one I'd look more south than Wisconsin to purchase. I've dealt with too much rust on used vehicles to ever want to deal with it again...

Yeah I have no complaints about these. It's really no different than the Yukon my dad used to DD except maybe more exposed front tire haha.
I think people were so quick to hate them because they were giant. Their MPG is no worse than an equivalent Tahoe or Yukon though.
Also - consider an H3 Alpha with the V8, even cooler man.

I will admit to having multiple soft spots for the H3T.
Anything in the Hummer lineup, once you move past the LOL HUMMER stigma, isn't going to be very expensive and uses easy to source Chevy everything. I can't think of a reason to avoid them if you're already looking at a mid or fullsize true 4x4.
The one pictured was a 5MT with Adventure package for sale on a Hummer forum back in 2012. It also had the weirdo 3.7L 5 cyl which I would avoid on principle for this type of application, mostly because the 5.3L V8 was available as an option and that would make a lot of things simpler.

Actually, get it after the price of gas bounces back up.
After the gas rise, Hummer will be cheaper by a grand or two. That will easily offset the money you'd spend buying gas at a higher price for at least a few months - guaranteed.
Don't buy it now, thinking that gas is going to stay this cheap and you'll keep saving on refilling, That will be a gamble. Gas wont be this cheap for much longer.

My lawyer actually drives one of these. It's got the 5cyl and a stick. It's been a great car for him. He takes it on trails and off road. Mudding on occasion. I'm a fan.

Yeah I think the H3 series especially got a bad rap. They look good and have pretty reputable DNA for whatever the normal outdoorsy person would need. I'd definitely seek one of these out if I was on the market and do a little rehab/modification to get it where I wanted it.

I would go for the H3, because it is a bit more capable. Unless you just want to feel like an NBA/NFL player, then get the H2.
