It actually came out before the S80 was a concept.

Why would someone to that to that poor volvo ? EDIT : so this ugly beast is not based on a Volvo apparently. Still.

That would explain the panel gaps.

Not really, the S80 came out in 1998, the ECC concept which below has nearly all of the P2 styling cues was built in 1992, and the sketches for the S80 itself were around as early as 1994 ( http://www.shado.co.uk/portfolio/desi… ).
Kinda makes the 442t look like a prototype of the ECC, but built 5 years later.

Once again I must take all of you to school - this is the test mule for the never-realized Saab/Lancia/Alfa/Renault midsize diesel-electric sedan. With a 5-cylinder 2 liter Volvo engine combined with four electric motors made by Mattel, it was said that the car would reach 60kph within an afternoon and return 86 mpg if you kept it pointed downhill most of the time.

I got it all mixed up, I'm sorry.

No worries. I actually haven't heard of the 442t before I saw it here and thought it was the ECC in the thumbnail, I'm a bit mindblown. Thanks for sharing it.

Should have said "shared platform." Despite many shared components, the Lancia would have been the least reliable.

And Saab would consider the car to not be good enough, thus redesigning it almost from scratch.

Clearly some type of Volvo with a fascia job.

As we learned from the Saab farewell (get it?) on Top Gear. And of all of the disappeared, Mercury, Pontiac, Saturn, Oldsmobile, Plymouth, Hummer (ugh), Saab hit me the hardest. Never owned one, although a past GF had a 900S that I loved driving, vague clutch and all. Always thought that if we retired in the country I'd get a Saab convertible (with the metal roof, so the GF wouldn't know it was a droptop). Would have to be an auto so she could drive it, but still .... Now probably a C70 or C30.

This car have a curious story. If I got the time, I'll write down a post about it today or tomorrow :)
If I recall correctly, I read its saga in Quatro Rodas, years ago.

More like will.i.am attempting to build a Volvo (although I get what you mean with the Integra, the headlights do look similar)
