not at all, I had a 530i I had put a 535i motor in after the original lump overheated in traffic (typical e3/12 issue on the 3l) It was a gorgeous bronze metallic color too, this but faded very nicely into the color of a freshly minted penny

Not a huge German car fan but those are fine looking cars.

I had a coworker with one of these 5's. It was always breaking down, and I honestly don't know why. After helping him put on an alternator belt one day I realized it was a very simple car. I opened the hood and was shocked to be able to access EVERYTHING. It was almost like looking at an american engine bay from the 60's. I think I could of even stood in there.

Building this one in the shop now:
I like 'em, but haven't owned one. I put a 3.5 in one for a friend some years back, and have had a couple of E28s though. Grew up with a Bavaria too. Love the style.

Nope. Big fan here. Bought a 1981 528iA with 212k miles on it for my (now late) father-in-law 14-ish years ago. Graphit on whorehouse-red leather, baby. At 272k, the original, never-been-opened 2.8-liter would no longer hold a tune; getting it through California smog was tough. So we rebuilt a US M30B34 for it. He passed away, and we shipped the car to Minnesota.
Now - with 274k on the working odometer - it resides with a very good friend of ours. A couple of months ago we swapped out the original (yes, really) 3-speed autotragic for a manual. That is one goddamned happy car.
When we got it:
When it shipped from CA to MN (dig the cobwebs!):
As it sits in my buddy's garage today. Runs and drives great, not waiting for Euro bumpers and bodywork/paint:

great dump, I'd love to own an e12 at some point! Euro bumpers and an MT of course. I actually think they're way better looking than e28s.

Looking for some help on mine (‘77 530i) to replace the fuel filter (#2). The pump (#1) looks new, then it goes into (I think) the expansion unit (#3), and then the line goes through a grommet into the body of the car. Where is the filter normally? This diagram isn’t very helpful. I wouldn’t be surprised if they left it off, because the rest of this stuff is held on by coat hanger wire... but I also thought maybe it’s under the seat or further down the line? I don’t see one in the engine bay either.

The filter is normally under the right rear fender. You’ll need to remove the wheel unless you’re a contortionist. Also, FirstFives is your new best friend ;)

Thanks for the tip. I'm thinking it is missing altogether, then. I just didn't want to assume that.
