As the owner of a 63 hp 1980 Toyota Tercel with a 5 speed, I can honestly say that most cars with automatics are appliances, but every car with a manual is an experience.

My first car was one of those, only with a 3(?) speed automatic. WORST. CAR. EVER.

Did you ever drive one of those with the automatic? I drove both varieties, and while the one with a stick was actually reasonably peppy (63 HP will get a car around pretty well when it weighs as much as a box of crackers), the automatic was so pokey it was actually dangerous on U.S. public roads.

I've tried those. Never one that didn't make me feel like there was a creepy, silent old man sitting in the passenger seat, laying a moist hand on mine and shifting whenever he felt like it.

After having driven some very dull cars with manuals, with a (pristine) 1999 Corolla hatch the worst of all, I can confidently claim that a horrible soulless car with a manual is still a horrible soulless car. A manual might spice things up slightly, but some cars are so horrible it's like a drop in the ocean.

I think I was Kinja'd. But I intended to put a picture of a Washing machine next to that.

Ah. I thought you were referring to the "manumatic" as a compromise. But I agree.

Oh no, I totally got Kinja'd. Manaulmatics aren't my thing at all.

I think it has more to do with the mind set of the driver. Cars have become appliances because of consumer apathy. Cars aren't amazing to the average person anymore.
