Is the decision of putting the spare tire on the hatch of an SUV/Crossover/CUV/Lifted Wagon/Adversary a good one? I don't think it's a good idea if the vehicle in question won't really be prone to constant tire punctures. On a wrangler? Yeah, I guess it would be useful. But in a last gen Rav-4 or in a new Ford Ecosport? Its just a pointless gimmick and overcomplicating system that is both more expensive to build, more expensive for the customer, and more expensive for later repairs when that idiot in the Cavalier rear ends you.
What do you think about it? Should this be the norm, or should it be kept away from your children?

IT DOESN'T EVEN MATCH THE REST!

Hmmm, On certain cars they work. On other cars....ehhhh.

Wow that Cayenne is terrible

Haha I know! But I find the european SUV's with these odd mounting mechanisms to be quite cool
![]() 12/02/2014 at 20:51 |

NOPE! Unless stock, they don't belong. Period.

The video speaks for itself...

I had the same thoughts. Mostly, on european SUV's it looks weird in an obscure OEM way. But in anything else, nope!

Even if it looks terrible, i'd take a picture just for the rarity of it.

But on the VW Thing, it looks pretty fitting.

Eh, they serve a purpose. They allow for more cargo space, which some people like. Or if you offroad, if you upgrade your tires, they probably won't fit in the factory location.

You mean, not stock as the ones mounted on the trailer hitches? If so, yes, I dislike them.
But the ones on the Cayenne and Touareg are OEM, and I like those.

yeah, Honda shouldn't have messed about with rear spares in the CR-V

It looks Perfect in the thing

Yeah, it does seem ironic that they make them even more unsafe!

I think it should be used for what its name implies. For a spare wheel.
Thing is, people don't like that the tires on the car look big and chunky, whilst the spare looks dorky.

O.O The Cayenne is stock?! That's appalling. I'm sorry, but nope. The Touareg is okay.

I would also add a Land Rover Defender on top. But yeah, in really off-roady vehicles it makes sense.
I don't know what to think of the G-Wagen though

Yes, it does.

Great post.
I think it looks cool on most of those, but it is sadly kitsch.
It serves no purpose, it's just for show, so it must go.
And I bet it fucks with your senses when backing up...
I like it best on the FJ40...
If you HAVE to put it on the outside, may I recommend the roof, or the hood even?
That just screams adventure...

Thanks a lot!
And yes, roof or hood spare wheels are badass.

What's worse ? On top?
I actually have my spare mounted on the back bumper. A 33" wheel & tire isn't easy to get on the roof also space saver & right behind me so it doesn't actually block much of back window.

I've had 2 cars with rear mounted spares (1st gen rav4, Isuzu Rodeo) and I wish my cruiser had one. Pros and cons. The swingout on the rodeo was garbage, a rust magnet and finger death. The Rav4 was AWESOME because it meant that the back so insanely roomy (seriously you could have like 5 people kneeling up comfortably in there), but it made things like driving with the back open impossible (i wanted it more than a few times). I wish the cruiser had it because the spare hangs low and its prone to getting caught on things, and making it difficult to change in the muck.
Putting it on the back is the way to go if you expect to change it. The roof is a poor choice because its adds top weight which is the worst thing you can do to any car, the hood is okay, but it really cuts into sight lines. The back is where its at. If tire swings weren't so stupid expensive, I would have one already, I want the ARB model.
like so.

I think on the roof is pretty cool

Great answer, and a family relative also raves of the space in her Rav-4. Then again, she also hates the fact that the door opens with side hinges.

Nahh

Haha this is the third time someone posts a video of how bad they act in small impacts. I think rear sensors are a must.

The one benefit for the spares being mounted like that vs underneath the vehicle is that it doesnt get blasted by all of the salt and mud and other crap.

Very good point.
