When the i8 was announced, much was written about its revolutionary new key fob.
Yet, when it actually arrived, it was delivered with this:
BTU: What did you get? Any explanation for the change?

That is a terrible surprise! :(

My guess is, BMW finally came to the realization that battery tech had advanced nowhere near far enough to make a key like that, and not have it die in under a week.

I would've thought that when you put the fob into the dashboard to start the car it would've charged it.

Well when your phone can do that better it makes sense not to have a key that requires constant recharging.

Yeah, I can't find shots of the fob on their site anymore, but the app looks good

Do you do that in the i8? I thought it was just a push button?

honestly I'm not sure. I just assumed the startup procedure was like all other modern bmws

all modern BMWs have keyless ignition. There isn't a place to charge the key or insert the key. Presumably the i8 would have capactive charging for the key.

I think they just decided to produce an app for your phone instead.

BMW has had an app for their cars for a long time. That being said, I can see how thats a better option.

Not necessarily relevant here but I saw my first real life, on the street i8 this past Thursday. Even in the White/Black two tone it was beautiful. They were close to our building so if I see them again, I'll ask them.

A board member lost a key and said they're douches for charging $3k for replacement key?
