BMW: Now I Get It

It's been two weeks since I took delivery of my E92 328i. I had some trouble bringing myself to BMW ownership - mostly the cliche that entails ownership - but I must say that outside of every woman that sees it saying it is a straight-up sexy ride, and my neighbours that think I am now dabbling in meth sales, it is an incredible piece of machinery.

The thing that gets me is that aside from that stereotype about BMW's, it really isn't a rude car in any way. It certainly isn't the fastest. Isn't the most luxurious. Likely won't be the most reliable. But it does absolutely all of those things, and with a grace that just isn't found in other cars.

I've driven a lot of everything. I grew up with E28, E30, E36 and E46's in the family, and they have all been fantastic cars. The E92 is no question a true evolution of the latter three.

There is something special about a rear-wheel-drive, normally aspirated in-line 6, BMW coupe with the toys to make it interesting that just can't be compared. Performance numbers be damned, this is one of the few modern-era gems available.... I am in love..

I'm so jealous of you growing up with BMWs. It's awesome that you snagged one of the last NA ones though. The N52 is supposedly one of the most reliable BMW engines too.

I shunned the N54/55 in favour of the N52. It is far from a rocket but god damn is it smooth and just "right".... BMW's, air-cooled Porsche's and Citroen's were, among others, regular garage items...

I love the E46. But the toys on the E92 make it a better commuter. I've got Cold Weather Pack, M-sport suspension, Nav, Voice Control and the HiFi sound system that I hear many complaints about but to my ears is fantastic...

By god you're right! They are total jerks. They're meaner than BMW! BMW may do some dumb shit but they're still making most of the cars that the enthusiasts want. And they offer Manuél in all the sporty cars.

Plus it's already a HUGE vehicle. So it's not like having a little extra weight is going to hurt it. At least then it will be super practical for road trips.

2nd best to me - the F11 is SEEEXXXYYY! But we don't get those here, so the e91 has to do. That pic was at the Berlin Wall during my Euro Delivery trip. Left that spot and drove directly to Stockholm - was a long day.

I had a similar experience coming to BMW for the first time from Volvos, Jaguars, Saabs, and Domestics. I for one had no experience with the earlier models, so the E90/91/92 just clicked. I can say that it is the first car that I've ever owned that I'd replace with almost an identical one if it got stolen today.

I couldn't agree more. I have trouble finding ways to express just how perfect it is, day in and day out, around town or on the freeway. I'm at an age where sports/performance cars just don't do anything for me and I could care less how much faster the STi or GT5.0 with the kid behind the wheel beside me is. I putz around town and when on the highway, cruise with the traffic in the two slow lanes and enjoy the classy-yet-understated interior environment and fantastic soundsystem. It is too nice to abuse.
