I am unashamedly the guy in the first frame.
While I generally liked what J.J. did for Star Trek, it appears he's also doing the same for Star Wars and it really just doesn't work for me.
What I would love to see, on the other hand, is a Christopher Nolan Star Wars. That would be pretty amazeballs.

As long as there isn't too much lens flare or galactic trade regulation I'm sure it'll be fine. They already seem to have avoided over reliance on the old characters since theyre not in the trailer.

1000 times this! I watched it with a friend yesterday. He kept playing it. Before he played it he would tell everyone around to shush each time.

Honest, I was still young when the new trilogy came out. I hadn actually seen the original ones came out.
To this day the only thing I got from it was that Pod racing is cool as hell. They shoulda done more.

Longpost warning!
Can't agree with that assessment. What wasn't working for the Trek movies is the actual story; the action was well within Star Trek's established boundaries. The only thing that really felt "Star Wars" was Spock's ship, mostly because of the sound design on it (yay Ben Burt!)
What J.J. has a problem with is taking ideas and concepts from the most popular/loved/original versions of whatever it is he's working with, and then trying to shoe-horn them all into his production to gain bonus points with the fans. That's what turned "Into Darkness" into such a trainwreck, and it looks like that mindset is spilling into Star Wars with the McQuarrie "X-Wings," a derpy Sith Saber, and a cutesy R2-inspired ball-droid. It's also why we're still getting the old cast back together one last time. Gotta have that throwback!
I also loathe the camera and prop work on this film already. Lighting is too fake, picture is too sharp, items are too clean. Still getting that "green screen" vibe off of it.
I'll reserve final judgement for when I see the film (and I will see it, so they win by getting my money), but right now it still feels like a series of check-boxes that Disney and J.J. are covering. I will not be at all surprised if fans beg Lucas to come back, as much as I don't want that to happen.

But everything was way cleaner than it was in Episode IV. After all that talk about how they wanted it to feel "lived in" like the original trilogy, I'm a bit disappointed.
I also really, really don't like those X-Wing derivatives.

David Fincher Star Wars.

I'm in between. I liked all the Star Wars movies and at age 23 I fit squarely in between the guys in the comic. I haven't bothered to watch the teaser for the new one and I probably won't watch it. I know I won't watch the movie either way. It will be terrible.

is the guy on the left supposed to turn into the kid on right after starting to watch?

Exactly! As I said to GhostZ earlier, I'm nervous, but my childlike excitement overcomes it.

Seven, Zodiac, Fight Club, Social Network, Dragon Tattoo, Gone Girl and some of House of Cards.

Out of all of those, I have only seen Fight Club . Once. I'm not sure that's enough for me to make a judgement on how he'd do with Star Wars .

It would be different but he's just as good as Christopher Nolan. Definitely a grittier unconventional style. Fight Club is probably the most extreme of his films, Social Network is probably the most innovative.

I've also been imagining a Neil Blomkamp take on Star Wars . That could be fairly interesting, too, and actually might be the most fitting if we want a "used" look.
I'd watch the shit out of that.

See I *love* the idea of having the original cast come back for a few cameos but I loathe the idea of them carrying the first film. The first film should be a "handoff" where you have some scenes of luke and hand and leia doing actiony/heroic stuff but also being tired and old and passing on the torch to the new stars. I've heard that JJ wanted them to carry the first and be cameos in the second while the writing staff told him he was an idiot and wanted to just have them be large cameos or supporting stars in the first and mostly relegated to cameos or background roles in the second and third.....as they should be.
And the new lightsaber? LOVED. IT. It reminds me of some of the books and how they described "raw, roughly made" lightsabers where their beam pulses and flares a lot. One interesting theory is that the "hilt" is actually some exhaust for excess energy when the beam "flares" due to length. Personally I just want the idea that they're there for combat and the mini blades at the "hilt" can extend as well when needed but the whole assembly is rough and imperfect due to lack of a master. Imagine if vader was training this person in secret but never got around to talking about how to make a"proper" lightsaber. It is expected that the master teaches the apprentice how to build it. So it makes legitimate sense that this lightsaber would be rough and not how we traditionally see them.

The cross-bar is what bothers me about that light-saber, bot the blade qualities. The crackly blade was awesome. One of the problems with the Prequel Trilogy was that the blades did not feel alive the way they did in the original movies. In Episode IV, the blade was actually a rod with a triangular cross-section covered in reflective tape that rotated via electric motor and was hit with a spotlight. They ended up rotoscoping over it anyway, but the flickering effect is the result of the blade spinning.
That's the kind of awesome shit they need to be bringing back.
The biggest problem with having J.J. in charge is that he's not anal enough about the details and how everything fits together. Somebody like Nolan or Blomkamp, however, would be absolutely phenomenal. Star Wars needs somebody who is as scrutinizing as Lucas was in the late 70s, and who will toss out the boss if he calls for fan-servicey items even if they don't really work. Somebody like Nolan would also get them to do most of the SFX in props and really nail the "lived in" feel that Star Wars demands but J.J. probably can't deliver on.
As for the old cast coming back, that in itself doesn't bother me. It just bothers me if they don't seem to actually fit in.

Well the vehicles and droid all looked a little scuffed up, but it's going to look cleaner because of the better cameras and cgi tech these days. Not to mention it's a year away, they might have more finishing to do on the shots in the trailer to make it look more like the old movies, hell the trailer shots might not end up in the movie. Besides the only stuff that looked really clean was the stormtrooper armour which always looked clean in the original trilogy.

If you like the used look, you'd have loved to have Fincher film this. He purposely slightly damaged the negatives to fight club to make it look grittier I believe.
![]() 11/30/2014 at 05:36 |

I'm reasonably certain that the quality of the shots in the trailer is the quality we'll see on the big screen.
And yeah, the camera tech does have something to do with that, and they should probably recognize that aspect and do something with it. I don't want a super high fidelity, CG-laden Star Wars. It's pointless and shallow. I want Star Wars built with the same love and care that Interstellar was built with. Shoot it on 70 mm ffs, not some RED crap.
As for Storm Troopers always looking clean in the originals (lizard is added, scene is not):
Even in the prequels (wow this CG is dated):
Finally, regarding Fincher, I'm not sure he's the right guy for Star Wars . I have only seen Fight Club , and that's not enough to know his style.

You got me there, I was mostly thinking of the scenes on the death star and the like where the stormtroopers were mostly undamaged.
I obviously know nothing definite but generally when a movie has a trailer this early, a lot of changes are made between the two.
Interstellar is a bit of an outlier where the film maker got a fair bit of freedom. Star wars will be tightly controlled and likely going the way marvel did. Super clean looking huge franchise with a universal feel that individual directors arent allowed to interfere with.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for that very reason. There is absolutely zero gravity to any of those movies and they all come off feeling cheap.
Batman Begins , on the other hand, was absolutely fantastic. Dark Knight was pretty good, too, if a little clean, but Heath Ledger's death really screwed up Dark Knight Rises .
I also think Man of Steel is better than pretty much any of the Marvel Movies outside of the first Iron Man , but I recognize that as an unpopular opinion.

I still like some of the MCU, particularly iron man 1 and 3, but thor rubbed me the wrong way for some reason and I don't see them aging very well.
The batman films were great but I wouldnt like much else to be done the same way. Certain superheros would be ruined by the gritty serious aesthetic.
I havent seen Man of Steel (superman is a rubbish superhero in my opinion so I didnt bother) so I cant really comment on that one.
![]() 11/30/2014 at 07:14 |

I don't think Supes is rubbish. He was portrayed really well in the DC Animated Universe. Most writers just suck with him; the key is making his challenges ethereal rather than material. Moral and emotional rather than physical.
As for Man of Steel , the beginning is a bit rough and the art direction for Krypton is very questionable, but as a debut movie it immediately throws Superman into a problem that Superman doesn't normally have to face until he's an established entity in his world. I found that refreshing. I think the portrayal of Supes in the movie bit as do-good as Captain America. There was no crazy scheming. It was Superman, Superman's values, and Superman trying to do right by them.
Also, the super-powered fights in Man of Steel were incredible and made the battle in Avengers look like it was rendered by amateurs.

I just can't get on board with a superhero movie that is based almost solely on personal emotional challenges, I had the same issue with Raimi's Spiderman movies.
Although honestly I'm not huge on superhero movies overall+, I'm pretty picky over which ones I watch. I was a late comer to the MCU buzz and I only ended up getting into it because of iron man. That said I might give Man of Steel a chance some time, you're not the first person who's recommended it to me.

There's a physical challenge, too, but the physical challenge never offers tension in any superhero movie because you know the superhero is going to win. He always does. There wasn't any tension during the fight with Red Skull because you knew Cap was going to win. Batman and the Joker. Iron Man and Stane. Thor and Doombringer.
So you'll still get your action spectacle, it's just...does the hero make it out of the conflict intact, or does he bend? Does he break? Because a hero is more than just his physical power, he's also his message.

I duno Iron Man got his ass kicked in Iron Man 3 when they demolished his house. I guess he did get his revenge later though. I like the personal part of the story I just feel like Superman relies too much on it. Or maybe I'm just biased.

Turn Star Wars into Star Wars.
