The new Ford Explorer. I feel like the previous front end jived more with the rest of the vehicle than this, arguably, conservative makeover. I'm glad they're staying on top of things and giving meaningful refreshes but I think this one might just be a step backward. What say you, Oppo?

It makes it looks more like a Kia Soul. It's a step toward more conservative styling dressed up to appear as if it's not, so it's just weird to look at.

I prefered the looks of the older one much more tbh.

I don't like the bulbous front end of the current one. My mom has a '15 and it's a pain in th e ass to see what's in front of you when you're parking; fortunately I always guesstimate and leave at least 2 feet open ahead of me or I just get out of the car multiple times to correct my parking for perfection. The new front end might be a throwback of sorts, but it isn't bad at all.

I'd like to see what a refreshed Escape would look like ;)

"Shit, they're making fun of the design we clearly ripped off of Land Rovers.... what do we do for the restyle????"

"Steal a design or two from Hyundai."

Did they get rid of projector lamps???

I like it. I hate the tri-bar grill on the old one. And the headlights no longer are shaped like a penis drawn by a 12 year old. If they are ripping off anybody's design, it is LR.

I won't say I love the new look, but the current design just kind of made it look like a fat Edge.

It's better looking than the Grand Cherokee. Way better. That is all.

I'll give that to you.

True. I like the differentiation, however, it just looks like it belongs on a different vehicle.

Yeah, I see a lot of LR in this. I don't hate that. Just doesn't seem as cohesive as it was.

I feel like that will be a notable upgrade. The question is, will anyone notice?

I agree with that, it's incomplete. Personally, a 2015 F-150 headlight treatment would have tied it in with the "truck" lineup more and would have made more sense for their portfolio. I guess they did that in the foglights, but the reference is largely destroyed by doing that. They're pushing the design connection into the background but it needs to be more prominent, IMO.

This just looks dated to me. We expect more dynamism from the front end in an update like this, and the the rest of it isn't dissimilar from the current Explorer. That is the defining characteristic of the vehicle and they went very conservative.

People are saying Hyundai this and LR that, but I think it's way more derivative of the Taurus X, all things considered.

It looks like it's gone back to 2005 again, where Ford was busy wasting money on concept cars that were obviously never going to go anywhere.

That's true, too, and that probably played a role in their decision.

All of the vehicles in this class with enough history to have been RWD, solid axle, body-on-frame construction with truck credentials - Trailblazer, Grand Cherokee, Pathfinder, etc - are now crossovers with none of those features. GC might be the only one that doesn't have a 3rd row option.

GC doesn't have a third row option? Hmm. I don't think I see the point in a third row in some of these crossovers. Their useless, unremovable in many applications and take up too much cargo area space.

The headlights sit flush against the grille on the X, which was the main thing for me. But both have the lights and grille on the same horizontal plane as the new Explorer does.

Still...a real yawner of a look.

I dont see the point in it either. The Explorer has had a 3rd row option since 2001 i think, and it's as you describe - useless and space wasting.

But people want them. I give credit to Jeep for not compromising the GC with those despite not having a bigger car in the lineup that could have them.
