But I really, REALLY want the next gen S1000RR

Kinja'd!!!

ABS, TCS, wheelie control...lean sensors and cruise control will probably make this is best day-to-day super bike in the world...as well as the easiest 1000CC to jump to.

yea yea, I know some ppl here dont like ABS and what not on their bikes. I do. Its a safety net that I love, esp when I'm in the rain.

Anyone wanna loan me 17K?

Trust me, stick with the 600 class. Absolutely no need for that on the road (if you are tracking that's a different matter). I have more fun on my SV than I ever did on my Fireblade.

IMHO, 650 to a liter bike is a doable jump, though I'm currently lusting over an 899 Panigale myself. My friends with S1000RRs love them, and I think they're even more beautiful in person, for what it's worth. If you find someone to loan you that 17k, let them know I need 15 too!

I don't think it's stupid at all, as long as you know what you're getting into. My first bike was a 380cc 2-stroke; a year later I moved up to an 1100cc V65 Magna. Night and day, but I took my time getting used to the bike and didn't (intentionally) do anything dumb while getting used to the big jump in power.

Oh I know there is absolutly no need for this on the road. even 600 is fast for the road.

I STILL WANT ITTTTT
IDK what id do qwwith my SV at that point though...to many memories to just let go

75HP to 200HP. IDK, I think i'd do well with something in between.

As much as I want to like the panigalies...I cant stand that face. it looks so dumb from certian angles... I thought the older 1098/848 s had a nice face...

hmm....1098/848 front fairing on a new pani.....

I'm not on a 600CC super sports (which would be the correct jump) . I'm on a 650CC sports touring.

600CC SS's have like 125, 130 HP.
the 650 ST are about 75

this 1 liter? 200

Mostly depends on your own level of self control. The bikes are physically the same size and my ex wife says riding hers is easy compared to our past suzuki's. I rarely ran my TL1000s all the way out, but it was nice to have the torque.

How many years you got brah

I (foolishly) started on a 650 and 3 years/12K miles later I'm still here. I think next year I will upgrade. No liter bike though. As awesome as this is, unless you live near a 180 MPH race track there's nowhere you could open it up in good conscience. Better to get something in the 100-130 HP range. Perfect HP for the street.

starts on buell blast (500 with the power of a 250) for about a year. upgraded to a 650/800 (I ride my dads BMW a lot) for the past 3

I'd love to get a triumph 675 daytona R. but insurance rated for SS's are killing me in my area. Almost tempted to get a Speed triple R and throw on the body work from the last gen 675 (i liked those looks more...but I want ABS and a fuel gauge)

Yeah, I jumped right in on my first bike which has about 75hp.

Of course, I have no plans to get anything bigger. Sure, I look all the time but then I crank the throttle on the highway in 6th and without downshifting I'm going faster than I need to be so meh, what's the point (other than wanting something new and shiny, which I totally get, everyone does). I'm still not bored with how the power comes on at 7,000 rpm. I guess when I get bored with that, maybe then something bigger.

Eh. I don't think it's stupid as much as that there are a lot of things to consider. I went from a Ninja 650 to a ZX10.

6 months after that I did my first track day, and slowly weaned myself off of street riding. I dropped my plate & insurance 3 yrs ago and don't miss it at all now.

The thing about riding a 1000 that can't be overstated is just how much power is available, and how unusable it is on the street. Just 1st gear is good until at least 80mph, usually more. Since most of them are geared prettly closely, you'll still get rip-your-arms-off acceleration in most any gear though.

On your 650, you can probably go down an on-ramp and shift at full throttle and high rpms in 2-3-4, and end up a bit faster than traffic by merge time. On a 1000, you'll be doing 120mph at the top of 3rd and plastered into the back of minivan if you try the same thing. There's just not enough room to use all of the power, and yet it tempts you every time. At best you can get a little hint of hard acceleration for maybe 2-3 seconds, before you have to let off.

Plus, my 650 was great to ride on the street, my ZX10 is terrible. The seat is too hard, the suspension is too stiff, and the seating position made my back hurt after anything over 1/2 hr. Put the ZX10 on a track and it is perfectly laid out and comfortable.

That said, I've heard good things about the BMWs, everybody that has one seems to like it. Regardless of electronics and whatnot it's still too much power for road use though.

Kinja'd!!!0

ehhh, my 650 has a bit more guts then that. doing what you say, i'll end up at about 170, 180 KM in a place with 100KMh speed limits.

i'm well aware its far to much power. FFAAARRRR too much power. Doesnt make me want it any less.

option 2 would be this:

Kinja'd!!!

HP2 sport thata buiddy has. its about 130-140 HP, but lots of torque and far more presance then most other liter biker (BOXXER!!!!) NO TCS, but yes ABS,. which is good enough for me.

Kinja'd!!! nermal > bob and john
11/26/2014 at 15:20

Kinja'd!!!0

I hear ya on wanting the power. Gotta have a place to use it all though, and safely.

It's one of those things that doesn't make sense until you experience it. The reason you see people riding sportbikes wayyyyy too fast is because it's so easy to do that, plus they're uncomfortable when you go slow.

Really depends on what you're looking to do. That HP2 looks pretty sweet!

You don't NEED traction control or ABS as long as you don't ride dumb (Full throttle at full lean on cold tires? YAY!!!), although both would be good to have.

Kinja'd!!! bob and john > nermal
11/26/2014 at 15:29

ABS will always be on my (daily riden) road bikes. Its saved my ass once, and that all it needed to do.

I kinda have an area to use the power. local toll highway is DESERTED at night, and its a road designed for 250KM/H speeds. 3am runs are not a uncommon thing to see or hear of.

I did get the power once. took out a brand new 675 daytona for a spin. highway was right in front of the dealer. Let it wide open on the on ramp, flew by the dealer at some un-disclosed speed that was far above what i should have been doing. WORTH IT, as I only had the bike for 30 min.

The HP2 my buddy has is IMMACULATE. even has the hard to find, $5K titanium akrapovic full exaust and tune. sounds glorious.

Fellow SV650 wrangler here.

I'm regularly tempted to go for more power, have ridden many bikes but not a recent literbike in anger, so know there'd be some adjustment to say the least. A few key things to consider - that S1000 has a rain mode that has been used to great advantage in I think it was California Superbike School? May be the best way to learn to wrangle a literbike.

That having been said, I am still trying to kick the street riding habit. I can avoid it 99.99% of the time but I just can't stop jonesing. For street riding, I do want torque, but a literbike with crouched-forward position is not conducive to navigating traffic (need the leverage and balance of being a little more neutrally positioned IMO). ...Which brings me to my latest silly ideas of maybe a rockster or R1100/1200S, not an HP2 certainly but a lot cheaper (than an S1k too) and MOST of the charm. Those boxer motors are what pushed me to a cheapo SV in the first place anyway, lots of character.

I personally? Will buy an S1000R sometime, I'd bet 90% likelihood. But, it'll be when I have space for 3+ bikes (can only manage 2ish now) and have room in the budget to throw away that kind of cash. That's the thing with expensive bikes - as a fellow track rat (an older, wiser gentleman) pointed out standing next to his beat-to-hell primered ZX6R, "I can drop my ducati in the garage and do more damage than this bike's worth!".

What do you need, afford, want, feel comfortable with? Get that.

The thing that makes it a problem to run a bigger bike with more power, as long as you have some experience, is between your ears. The thing that makes it dangerous is the rectal-cranial clearances of the rider. Sort those out and you can rock just about anything. Except, jet, drag bikes. That requires big brass ones and experience. But mostly big brass ones. And maybe a turboed Hayabusa. Ain't no reason for that.

I've jumped from a 50 to 60 to 850 to 1000 to 50 to 750 to 1300. Cruisers, sports, dirts. Yamahas, Harleys, Hondas, Nortons. BTW I am old, so get off my lawn;).

Hopefully picking up a cheap 600cc track bike next year and wringing it out on the track will help me get a little more comfortable with more powerful bikes.

Yeah. That is probably the way to go. I knew a guy who has a 750 GSXR Slingshot. He sstarted trackjng it and bit by bit he changed parts until one day he realized that removing and closing off the light openings probably made it not legal. The guy used to endo into the staging lights to do the 1/4 mile. He knew the last time he did it he was getting booted so he catwalked a 10 second run. Crazy guy. Bike was so loud we could hear it in the middle of the night 5 miles away on the way out. We knew when he turning to come back in because it got quiet. Too quiet.

I have a friend with an S1000RR, he adores it, says it is the easiest friendliest bike he's ever owned - and he's had about 10. He isn't a squid, and has a mature mindset to riding, maybe that helps. I've never been on anything nearly as powerful or capable, but he says I'd have no problems either. It's really tempting, as it is such a cool bike - just, like you say, the price hurts.

Oh I forgot - that's what kept me away most, even more than the purchase price or my paranoia of such a powerful bike. My friend pays more for the bike alone than I pay to fully insure 2 MBs - one a nearly new car.

Anyway, I encourage you to buy it, so I can live vicariously through 2 people :)
