My boss has a Crosstrek XV that is drinking oil like I drink coffee. He's sick of it.
He loves the car's off road ability and ground clearance. He hates the seats and he says he can't shift it smoothly.
We were chatting and he suggested a Mercedes Benz GLA as a replacement. It's basically a fatter, more expensive and more luxurious than his current ride. He's also been tossing around the idea of an Evoque. Oppo, what would you suggest? He'll want something that can go off the beaten path and is more comfy than his Subaru. Pricing comparable to the Crosstrek.

>go off the beaten path
>GLA
LOL
The evoque I hear is not actually that bad offroad, if you equip it with a proper set of tires.
he goes realize that the only think that compared in pricing and off-roady ness to the crosstrek is the cross trek right? no one else makes something similar in that price range that doesnt suck ball off-road. (or at least non come to mind right now)

Yeah the GLA and Evoque are clearly fantasy suggestions. I told him that the best he was going to be another Subaru or Wrangler. This experience and the previous have soured him on Subarus he had a Forester that was hemorrhaging money.

If he likes ground clearance warn him away from the GLA. The ground clearance is even worse than most crossovers.

I didn't realize Crosstrek got that bad that fast. Didn't they just come out not too long ago??
MACAN OR BUST

Good to know.

Off road ground clearance or deep snow ground clearance?

one of my employees has an XV, what are the deets on why his is drinking oil. He said he hates the seats too on his

I'm not sure if different trim levels have different ride heights, I parked next to one and it barely had more clearance than my Panda. Some reviewers seem to think it has decent clearance though.

That is really unfortunate, I really really want to like the Crosstrek XV's, im hoping they make a WRXV Crosstrek with the 2.0t motor.

Bad piston rings. A CLA is being filed against Subaru for it.

Why not a Renegade?
![]() 11/26/2014 at 08:32 |

If he can afford it, get a CPO Evoque. He wants on-road manners and off-road capability, the Land Rover apparently has both.
Otherwise, as the others have mentioned, there's not much else out there in the same category. Perhaps a CR-V or Rav-4?
![]() 11/26/2014 at 08:32 |

Both. He's an outdoorsy guy so he'll take whatever he gets pretty deep into the Maine woods.

Take the XV to the dealer and complain about the oil. They'll check it and maybe replace the piston rings.
![]() 11/26/2014 at 08:33 |

Yeah his is a 2013. I guess they used shitty piston rings.
![]() 11/26/2014 at 08:34 |

huh, interesting. I was unaware of that issue, though the horizontal pistons is harder on the rings. How many miles on his whip?
![]() 11/26/2014 at 08:34 |

he is more or less screwed then.
the wrangler is a terrible DD, really only good if you go off-road a lot
mistubishi...eh.
the only thing that MIGHT work is a VW tiguan. but unless it was well maintained (and it probably wasnt, because the only poeple who buy those are far from car people) it might get him in maintenance.
![]() 11/26/2014 at 08:35 |

He did. They won't.
![]() 11/26/2014 at 08:35 |

What about a CrossTour?
![]() 11/26/2014 at 08:35 |
|
I'm not sure. Not many.
![]() 11/26/2014 at 08:37 |

Because they aren't available yet.
![]() 11/26/2014 at 08:38 |

Then real ground clearance is in order. A lot of people like it but never use it.
![]() 11/26/2014 at 08:38 |

Thats messed up. They did the same to my dads because it "burns less than a quart every 1000 miles."
Soured my interest in Subie after hearing that.

It's too bad the Renegade isn't out yet. How about a Cherokee?
![]() 11/26/2014 at 08:40 |

He's in the same boat. Strangely he doesn't feel like that is an acceptable level of oil to be burning in a brand new car.

Early 2015 brah
![]() 11/26/2014 at 08:41 |

Yup he will use it. He's taken that little Crosstrek through some gnarly stuff. Almost flipped it slipping into a sandy ditch.
![]() 11/26/2014 at 08:42 |

That is a good idea.
![]() 11/26/2014 at 08:42 |

Yeah. Um. Not the mercedes, then.
![]() 11/26/2014 at 08:43 |

I'm pretty sure that an the Evoque were completely fantasy ideas.
![]() 11/26/2014 at 08:44 |

I dunno I'll suggest it. He seemed interested in the Fiat Panda ... I mean Renegade.
![]() 11/26/2014 at 08:51 |

if we;re gunna fantasize lets crank that know to lvl 100
in reality, I was a Lincoln MKC. I know its just a tarted up Escape but damn it was beautiful
![]() 11/26/2014 at 09:05 |

He'd have a Rambo Lambo if he could.
![]() 11/26/2014 at 09:21 |

I think you could get a real 4x4 system in the Jeep Patriot, not sure how the pricing is on the Crosstrek so I don't know if it's comparable though.
![]() 11/26/2014 at 09:51 |
|
Nope. It's a part time AWD, if that makes any sense. It's front wheel drive based and has an electronic clutch that engages and disengages the rear wheel.
![]() 11/26/2014 at 09:59 |
|
I'm pretty sure it has an actual transfer case and low range, at least optional. Maybe it's not available anymore?
![]() 11/26/2014 at 09:59 |
|
If he is looking for a smallish crossover I'd suggest the Escape with the AWD 2.0L. My wife has one with the 1.6L and I love it and I can imagine the extra 62hp of the 2.0L would do wonders to this thing.
![]() 11/26/2014 at 10:23 |

I agree 100%. A little oil burning is okay, but somewhere in the manual it states to expect up to 1qt of loss every 1400 miles. Thats just ridiculous to me, especially for a 4 banger

I told him it was just like having a rotary except with more torque and pistons and less angry bees.
