I have a MkV Jetta 2.5 and I'm looking for a wheel/tire package. Would 205/60/15 tires work on 5x112 15x6 rims with a 41 offset?
Also, more generally, give me your opinion on the difference between all seasons and snow tires. Right now I have Conti ExtremeDWS on. Will snow tires make a huge difference?

first: yea, there is a HUGE difference in All season and winters. thats sort of like asking if there is a difference between all season and high-performance tires. (if not more, as the compunds in all-season become useless under 7 degrees C)
OH OH OH.
I KNOW YOU CAN GET THESE BECAUSE WE HAVE THEM ON OUR AUDI.
marangoni 4 ICE+. seriously, best winter tire in ther world. our A3 TDI (FWD with them) outhandles our is250 AWD on Michelin X-ice2's.
they last forever (5 year now, about 1/2 the tread left) changing them because we dont trust 5 year old compounds.
not entirely sure on the price. we paid i think 1400 for a wheel tire package from our audi dealer, that was 17inch alloys, TPMS sensors and the tires.
cons: they are loud and you lose 2 or 3 MPG. but shit. for the difference between those and the x-ices on the lexus, we'll take those in a heart beat. we are actually planning on shodding the lexus in them this year.

Depends on where you live. If you get a lot of snow, get snow tires. If you get snow here and there and 1 or 2 might be heavy, all seasons should be fine. I live in KS and all seasons work fine for me. Even in 4 or 5 inches of snow I can get around with them. Any more than that I break out the F250 with M&S tires.

My wife has DWS's on her A4 quattro. Man are those some really good all seasons.
I need winter tires for my GTI as I have a set of summer tires on right now. I don't want to part with my $700 though.

also, that size wont work. 6 inch (wide) rims are for something closer to 160 wide tires. you need closer to 8 inch wheels

Should fit.
I had the Conti Extreme DWS on my Acura TL year-round and they were fine in upstate NY snow. I'm thinking I may put a set on the wife's Volvo S60 to replace her all seasons. That said - dedicated snow tires are a huge improvement when it gets extra crappy out and I am personally running a set of 205/55/16 on 16x6.5 steelies for my JSW.
It depends what you are going to be doing for winter driving and what you expect to run into for snow conditions.

An 8 inch wide wheel for a 205?!?!? No way! That would be stretched like mad! I have a 205/55/16 on a 6.5" wheel. A 205/60/15 is rated for a 5.5" - 7.5" wheel with an 8.2" section width on a 6" wheel.
Section width =/= rim width.

then I fucked up my math somewhere....also i thought section width was directed related to rim width?

Related, but not equal to. See here.

huh. okay then.
still think a 8.3~ inch wide tire shouldnt be going on a 6inch rim.

Well, below is what a 205 on an 8' wheel looks like. Not so safe imho, but stance does it.

Blizzaks (Bridgestones) are an excellent choice for VW winter tires. I've used them for years and have really liked them. Pretty quiet and plush feeling for a winter tire and they grip really well.
I just got some Bridgestone Winterforces on this time b/c even though I scheduled appointment to get 4 Blizzaks, (tire store messed up & I needed new winter tires). So far (only a few weeks) I've been happy with them. Not as quiet as the Blizzaks, but seem to grip about the same.
nokian hakkapeliita's have an excellent reputation too, though I don't have any personal experience with them.
1st time hearing about Marangoni's, tks for the tip, I'll have to read up on them!
