That !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! I want it. Badly. After I finish uni, I want to get one.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
They will probably keep selling it at that point (4-6 years from now)
BUT. here is the thing.
^This little guy. The MK6 Golf R.
I have a friend of mine who has one. Same color as above. He uses it as his winter car (is a motorcyclist...loves his BMW boxers) and is INSANELY particular about maintenance. I could probably pic his up for 3-4K under market value at the time, and use that extra 3-4K at APR and tune it to the R400's performance level.
Hes had his car since new too...
So oppo, which would you get? The R400, or the MK6 R and head on over to APR?
EDIT: Someone reminded me that the M7 golf is going to be made in mexico... This begs the question: with the MK7 R and R400 be built in mexico too? If so, then i'm buying the blue on. I want a German car. I do not want a gGermancar made in mexico.

Have you learned nothing?
![]() 11/19/2014 at 23:41 |

what are you talking about?
our VAG product (A3 TDI) has been nothing but a peach for the past 5 years. As has that MK6 GoRf my buddy has.

You have fun with those repair bills. I don't care how meticulously it's maintained, it's a VW.
![]() 11/19/2014 at 23:41 |

chances are they wont sell that in canada....

I'm going to get a new GTI but the longer I stay in my current Golf, the less I'll owe in a new car so waiting for the manual in 2016 may actually be a possibility. Couple that with saving money until then and it might just make the payments affordable!

Whoops, confused you with the the young vdub kid that was upset his tdi traction control wasn't defeat-able.

TDIs never break it seems. Like that's the one engine VW can do right.
![]() 11/19/2014 at 23:45 |

GLI*
and yea, I'm not him :P
actually...thats a intresting point...the MK7s are built in german right? does that mean the MK7 R's and R400s will be mexican made too?
![]() 11/19/2014 at 23:48 |
|
I admit they had uissues in the mid-2000s. Kinda like the malaise era for the germsn. but they have brought everything back to up snuff from what I've heard. (on the german cars anyways. I still dont trust the mexican built machines)
![]() 11/19/2014 at 23:51 |

You're gonna end up with a Fiesta ST like the rest of Oppo and you know it
![]() 11/19/2014 at 23:53 |

I don't care either way, I'll be avoiding any German car until I have at least $3,000 a year to spare for issues.
![]() 11/19/2014 at 23:55 |

with what your spending on your van, you already there arent you? :P

fuck that noise. Its no a bad car, dont get me wrong. but we dont have AutoX in canada, and we have Snow. AND I think the ZFist is ugly as hell. and small.
GoRf, here I come!

no AWD, no sale for canada.
![]() 11/19/2014 at 23:57 |
|
No. Not even close.
Plus its 21 years old, sat outdoors basically unused for six years, and saw development in the 1980s. That I expect to have issues, not a 8 year old car with "German engineering excellence."
![]() 11/20/2014 at 00:00 |

You don't need AWD. Get snow tires and learn how to use the LSD, and this will go anywhere you need to go.
![]() 11/20/2014 at 00:00 |
|
I think that joke went right over your head...
in either case. The E888 motor was also one of the ones they managed to get right. look at how many GTIs are running around with 300+ tunes on them. the block was crazy understressed at 200 HP.
300...ehh. but now they are putting 400 through it, so I'd trust it./
![]() 11/20/2014 at 00:01 |
|
you cant be DRIFTO with FWD.
I dont need it to drive in the snow, I want it to be able to powerslide in the snow.
![]() 11/20/2014 at 00:10 |
|
I see. Since the R400 should cost around $40k, I'll say Mustang GT. If you need 400hp, get it in a car built for 400hp and not one built up to 400hp.
![]() 11/20/2014 at 00:19 |
|
ewwww mustang. Shit int (yea, i've been in the lastest, its still crap) and the mustang bro stigma, uncomfortable (for me) and now they are ugly as crap. Not to mention stupid fuel consumption.
This is only going to be my winter car, might as well get AWD. You just really dont like VW do ya? :P
![]() 11/20/2014 at 00:19 |
|
FoST's don't come with an LSD :(
![]() 11/20/2014 at 00:25 |
|
I think of the VW the way you think of the Mustang. Except I also hate that the TC doesn't turn off, and it's as bland looking as anything this side of a Toyota Corolla. And yo, the VDub crowd isn't exactly a cool cult to be in.
Although I might just be biased due to the number of stanced GTIs I see scraping around town.
![]() 11/20/2014 at 00:32 |
|
you can turn them off in the R's.
I dont mind the blander looks. doesnt draw attention, (I think) its looks classy with just a touch of details.
both crowns have their idiots. here, the stance nation crowd is mainly honda's, so i can squek by as a VW
and its easier to sneak a 400HP golf under the potential father in laws eyes then a 400 HP mustang.
![]() 11/20/2014 at 00:41 |

Not without breaking into the ECU.
![]() 11/20/2014 at 00:46 |
|
I didnt know you had to do that...
in which case let me put it this way...you can in the one I'm looking at :P

Everyone keeps saying a golf/GTI will be expensive to repair and unreliable. Thoughts?
I'm really considering a MKVI GTI.
![]() 11/20/2014 at 06:50 |
|
Jesus, Everybody says that these are unreliable and that you should get a FiST or a FoST. Which I think are just not creative.
Half the people who say VAG products are unreliable have never even owned one, which gives them little to no room to talk. Go ahead and get the MK6 R.
![]() 11/20/2014 at 06:56 |
|
more or less.
I'm still wondering though...MK6 (that i know was built in germany and maining to hell and back, but has KM and "only" 300 HP..so there goes some moeny into a APR turbo kit.)
or more cash and buy MK7 R400 (which I dont know where its built, but it has a warranty and the 400 HP AND GREEN ACCENTS)
![]() 11/20/2014 at 07:01 |
|
That's a tough one. I think that the parts were made in Germany, but the car was just assembled in Mexico. But I can't be sure of that.
I'd say go for the Mk6, and APR the fuck out of it. Also, check if PES makes an S/C kit for those.
![]() 11/20/2014 at 07:06 |
|
....S/C? why would I want an S/C?
![]() 11/20/2014 at 07:12 |
|
PES systems sound like Sex, and they're pretty damn handy at adding power.
Superchargers are ze best.
![]() 11/20/2014 at 07:14 |
|
its already got a turbo...what would I need an Sc>?
remember, MK6 has a 2.0l, not the old 3.2 VR6
![]() 11/20/2014 at 07:15 |
|
Ya still need one.
Once you drive a supercharged VAG product, you will never go back.
![]() 11/20/2014 at 07:17 |
|
chekc on PES.
the onyl do a tune for the 05+ models, and even then its JUST the gti tune. oh well, they are out.
APR it is.
![]() 11/20/2014 at 08:21 |

I think the new Golf R is pretty pricey, that's what I think. Starts at what $36K?
So if the 6 is a better deal, go for it!
![]() 11/20/2014 at 09:54 |
|
Unfortunately my reliability info is a little skewed because this happened . I don't fear a repeat, though, as car fires are so random it could happen to anyone. Repair costs have been reasonable, but I'm currently on a CPO warranty. If you can find a CPO example and get the extended warranty, a GTI is a fantastic car. Just be ready for potential high repair costs out of warranty and I think it's a non issue.
![]() 11/20/2014 at 10:46 |
|
yea,. but the 6 wont have the warrenty, wont have the 400 HP, and will have to have more work done to it to bring it up to the new ones performance.
![]() 11/20/2014 at 11:15 |
|
Neither will the 7 . The new R only has 296 horsepower. Personally I think $36,595 is a lot for that output. That's only 20-30hp more than my FoST has and its another $10K and doesn't come with a manual. Nicer interior and AWD, sure, but that's pricey. Add the dynamic chassis control and you're almost at $40K. I like it, just not for that much cash.
![]() 11/20/2014 at 11:24 |
|
ok, the NORMAL R i'm considering is a used MK6 from a friend. it has the stick
OR the new R400 which is JUST a stick.
![]() 11/20/2014 at 11:26 |
|
Ah, what are you thinking price-wise? I'm guessing $50K-$60K USD.
![]() 11/20/2014 at 11:31 |
|
I'm not too concerned on price, reason being: its been proven time and time again the motor in the GTI and the R (i believe it is the E888) was ridiculously under-stressed. there are so many examples running 350+ HP in various applications (audis and VWs alike) that to get the 400HP with a warrenty, I think VW just changed the tune and the turbo.
on a second point: I hope to be finishing a mechanical engineering degree by then, and I'm hoping I can swing one with financing as a grad gift to myself.
![]() 11/20/2014 at 11:33 |

Good luck, keep us posted!
![]() 11/20/2014 at 11:34 |

will do.
as a side note, said friend also has a limited edition BMW motorcycle that i REALLY want (HP2 Sport S with ABS). I want to buy both of them (HP2 and GoRf) off him....
![]() 11/20/2014 at 17:09 |
|
Yeah. I mean the CPO I was looking at is a 2013 with 17k miles. Bumper-bumper is 3yr? 36k mile, drivetrain is 5yr? 60k mile.
Add on 2 yrs 24k miles for CPO.
That gives me plenty of time to sell it and get a new car after anyway. At least that's one of the thoughts I've been having.
![]() 11/21/2014 at 01:36 |

ello! I'm the young one :P
and I have reason to be upset. the 2011 GLI and the 2013 GLI both have TCS you can switch off. my 2012? NOPE! so yeah...
I do love the car though. it's great to drive day-to-day, even with all the abuse I put it through
