!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! leads with a rally-spec '79 Triumph TR7 V8 and it's awesome . I had never seen a TR7 rally and they were a thing, back in the day.
I've recently had a fascination with the idea of buying/owning/building a 60s/70s/80s rally homage, I guess you could call it. Maybe not a full competition car, but something streetable with a race livery, larger tires, flares, mud flaps, maybe a roll cage too. Kind of like a homologation special we never got. I wouldn't be against an engine swap for some of them too. Part of the appeal is that most of these cars are relatively cheap, even for a car in decent shape.
The insane late Group B cars were awesome, but were barely recognizable to their road car homologations.
Which street driveable (not DD) rally car homage would you want to own AND drive? Here are my favorites (that are affordable and available or importable to the US):
Wild card: RSTI version of this:
Wildcard 2: I already own a Navara (cum Frontier):

Lancia Stratos
I'm 6'4" tall, so I really wouldn't fit, but I don't care. I love it.

That Delta S4 isn't affordable.
EDIT: oh. it's an HF. I'd get a Stratos kit car then. It'll be better build quality and more reliable.

Haha, all good.
A Stratos kit car is an idea...

If you build the car yourself, and have any mechanical sense at all, you easily can get a more reliable and higher quality example than a factory built Stratos. They were only built for homologation purposes and never intended to be attractive for customers, so who cared about all the panels lining up.

I'd advise against caging it, at least initially. Cages mean things like cutting holes in dashboards, tearing up carpet, and removing the headliner. It's a bit of a pita, and not cheap (tubing material cost alone could run a full grand if you're building custom, not from a kit)

I would advise against as well, at least with normal seats and seat belts. Unless you're clever with seating position and cage location you can end up making it much more dangerous for yourself. If you crash and a bar in the cage is right in the path of your head as you're flailing around inside you can have a head injury that could be a hell of a lot more serious than any broken limbs you might get from a car crumpling...

The TAG Subaru is terrible with roll bar location, the bar going from the halo to the main hoop is uncomfortably far forward. Any side impact without helmets is almost guaranteed to result in significant head trauma. We really ought to swap in some halo seats.

Ooh shit that does look like a nasty place for a very hard piece of metal :S

Yep. And that roll bar padding on it doesn't exactly feel like fluffy kittens either.
