It is amazing how many dumb mother @#&%ers you see driving around in shitty snowy conditions with no lights on. Seriously, don't be this asshole. Fuck him and I hope he crashes into some other asshole with no lights on and they total both of their fucking cars. It's not like people around here aren't used to snow, we got 300" last year and average almost 250".

"up here" you must have lights on all the time, night or day. I think that's a good thing.

Problem not solved. Most daytime running lights are front only.

Its even worse when they dont wipe their headlight off. Like so much snow you cant even see them.

This tip also applies in a heavy rain. I've had people sneak up on me in broad daylight during rainstorms because they're driving a gray car on a gray day in gray conditions.

Even more shocking: that all cars do not have DRLs and automatic headlights now. I was driving around Santa Fe in a rental (the absolutely awful Xterra) and people kindly asked me why I was in stealth mode. Oh really? Because it's 2014 and I haven't had to turn on my headlights for literally 10 years. Sorry about that, Santas.

What sm70 said. Turn on your headlights when it is snowing. This also turns on your taillights, and usually generates enough heat to keep your tails melted free of snow. Or you can run around in DRL's and let your taillights get coated with snow so that the person behind you can't tell when you hit the brakes.

Kinja'd!!! BJ > You can tell a Finn but you can't tell him much
11/19/2014 at 15:54

Kinja'd!!!0

It's for this reason that I always turn on my lights, day or night, as soon as the engine turns over. I NEVER drive without my headlights and taillights illuminated. I come from the land of daytime running lights, which are good, but it's not enough IMO.

Automatic headlights kind of suck because it can still be bright enough to keep them from turning on even when it is crappy visibility.

Or the assholes who don't bother to clean off their windshields. Yesterday while it was snowing some stupid motherfucker was driving around in a grey/white SUV with no lights, no DRL's, snow and ice on the outside of the windshield and fogged up inside the windshield. Fuck him sideways with a ten foot pole covered in rabies, tetanus and ebola.

I'm pretty against stupid nanny state laws, so part of me thinks don't make that a law but on the other hand there are so many stupid people it wouldn't be the worst law to have.

It kind of bugs me that one of my cars has always on headlights and taillights, but it is nice for winter driving. Especially since it is small and grey. I usually turn the lights on in my truck as soon as I hop in when it is crappy weather even though the truck is huge and red.

11/19/2014 at 16:02

Kinja'd!!!1

I kind of don't like DRL's and automatic headlights because a lot of people don't realize that you still have to turn on the headlights in crappy weather. It is commonly too bright to kick on the auto headlights and still be very crappy visibility when snow is involved.

What I don't understand when I see these people is that with outside darkness, the dash must be blanked out so how do they see their speed? At least in my car I can't read anything when it's dark out and I only have DRL

11/19/2014 at 16:24

Kinja'd!!!0

A lot of new cars have always lit dash lights. My truck is like that, the dash is always lit up regardless of the lights. To really screw with you, the dash brightness depends on a light sensor and doesn't necessarily dim when the headlights turn on. As an added bonus there is not an indicator light to tell you when the headlights turn on. The only way to know the headlights are on is if it is dark enough to tell or you physically move the switch to the on position.

The next time you get flurries in Houston you should just stay home for a day or two until it all melts. I wouldn't trust a Texan driving in the snow.

Semi-related, when I worked at Park City we knew we were screwed as soon as we heard a Texas drawl coming through the line. Every. Damn. Time. It turned into a total clusterfuck when they tried to get on a chairlift. That experience makes me believe that Texans are better off avoiding any contact with snow.

At least turn on your corners so you have tails on too.

That's a good point. My car's lights don't turn on automatically but the dash seems to dim based on ambient light so I can tell pretty quickly.

Same when it's raining, I counted 32 cars with no headlights on during a torrential downpour in NYC on Monday, 32 within 1 hour it's fucking ridiculous. And I didn't see a single cop stop any of them even though I saw them around and here's the kicker I even saw a cop driving with no headlights either.

But if you're Black or Spanish walking down the street minding your own business they sure as fuck will jump out of a moving vehicle just to interrogate you and touch your balls.

Assuming you're asking me where I live, no it's not Finland. As for lift ops I actually really liked it. The guys I worked with were awesome and we got to ski a lot. We made it a challenge to see how long we could go between stops or slows. You had top hustle but we did surprisingly well considering it was an intermediate lift.

Well see I ski out west where I'm from but thought it would be cool to do it on the east coast. ..where it will never be cool. We also had the oldest chairlifts in the state procured from a chairlift scrap yard, I'm told. ..so probably the oldest in America. Glad I quit before people die. The people from out west I worked with were of course awesome, especially a bro-some tele-chick from AZ . ..All the locals were alcoholics who got their jobs through nepotism. Anyhoo....umm 40k people. ..Lichtenstein?

I live in the northern U.S. I have been to Lichtenstein and Finland if that counts for anything.

There were a lot of foreigners working at Park City and it was pretty cool. A lot of South Americans and British and their colonials. The mid season party was pretty boring until the Brazilians showed up dressed in shorts and carrying inflatable palm trees.

Word of advice, go skiing in Europe. Beg, borrow, steal, do whatever it takes to go. The skiing culture over there is just unreal and the Alps are mind blowing.

In the U.S. DRL's aren't mandated and very few cars equipped with them include having the taillights on. If the visibility is shitty, turn on your low beams. Problem solved.

Sorry, I keep forgetting DRL's and Automatic headlights are not one in the same. Every car I have driven past 2001 has both. That's how they they all should be, DRL/Auto always on.

My truck has auto headlights and it has to be fairly dark to turn them on. A lot of times when it is snowing there can be crappy ground level visibility but it will be bright enough that auto headlights won't turn on.

Yeah, haha! I think in Ontario its slowly becoming a by-law/law, where the cops can ticket you if your vision is seriously blocked or you have "unsafe" amounts of snow and ice on the roof. Basically a judgement call by the officer.
