I'm on the verge of selling my truck, so I'm looking towards my next purchase. I'm looking to spend anywhere from $5,000 to a max of about $15,000 (huge difference, I know). I'm looking mostly on the upper half of that range and I'm hoping to find something under $12,000, but if it's absolutely perfect, I can go up to 15. The issue is that I can't decide what I want. D:
I do know I want something 2005 or newer (preferably 2008-ish+) with a manual transmission and under 80k miles. 4-door preferred, but 2 doors is cool as well, 4 seats required. Gas mileage isn't a big deal, but I'd like to be able to get at least low/mid 20s on the highway. Fast is good, but it doesn't need to be a rocket or anything. Just fun to drive. Reliability is a plus too lol.
Most of what I'm gravitating to (2011-newer Mustang, MK6 GTI/TDI, 3rd Gen WRX) are exceeding my price range. Am I asking too much for my money? Other cars I'm looking at are Saab 9-3s, A5/A6 GLIs, B7/B6 A4/S4 (Avant would be epic), Fiesta, & Sonic Turbo... as well as probably a hundred other cars.
Let me know what Oppo thinks about my ideas and give me some of your own.
P.S. I asked a similar question recently, but the difference now is that this will be my daily driver and I'm hoping to keep it around for a few years.

Save a bit more for the WRX or Mustang IMO.
Old audi maintenance will probably kill you.

Might be able to get a lightly used Mazda 3 for that price.

What I would do is get a TDI wagon. not the most fun.
BUT on the side, you can get a motorcycle.
yeayeayea, 2 wheelsbad and all that. but heres is the thing. That TDI will get 50mpg and be (maybe a little) slow.
My 650 SV isnt all that slow (compared to cars) and I get 75 all day.
Take the car when you need to meet up with friends or its raining. take the bike ot work on a nice sunny day. its just you driving anyways, no point in having all that extra wasted space (and weight) if its just little old you :P

I definitely second the Mustang. Ideally a 2011 V6 .
Why 2011? That's when they got the VVT Duratech Engine, shooting up to 305HP. They also got dual exhaust, which means there isn't as much of an obvious stigma to the looks of the car (the V6 used to just have a single exhaust). Plus, they came with handling packages that weren't terrible.
Because of how light the engine is compared to the V8, it's the fastest fifth-gen mustang under $20,000 . The only thing faster than a 2011+ V6 is 2010+ GT or any of the Fifth-gen Cobras, which are all out of your price range. Plus, an extra $5000 down the road on engine mods and a 2011 V6 will outrun a 2014 GT.

05-06 GTO, won't break the bank when something breaks and it won't break often. 400hp isn't bad either. Also comes in your price range easily.

Mazdaspeed3 is in those ranges, 2009+ are around 12-13k loved mine before I got my G8. You could probably find a G8 GT with around 100k in your range.

This is probably my favorite choice out of everything right now. If I do go for one though I want to get leather, which bumps the price up a bit out of range (unless I get really lucky lol)

I'm just not a big fan of the looks on the GTO sadly :/

Well I guess to be that guy, you can get a new (V6) Camaro for the price and the new 'stang too.

I'd steer you away from the TDI. They aren't that fun to drive, the styling is bland, and the quality is VW.
- I own a MK5 TDI and I think about selling it all the time. I really like the 2006+ Acura TSX. I drive 25,000/year so reliability and mpg's are most important to me. The VW worries me on the reliability side.

My commute is only 1/2 a mile each way though. I thought diesels needed to be driven a little more (or at least a normal amount) to stay 'healthy' long term? How is the maintenance different on diesels?

...you want a car for a 1/2 commute?
go buy yourself an electric bicycle and charge it once a week
any normal motor that isnt brought up to operating tempt will be damaged more then one that is.
for ours, we've had it for...5 years, 80K miles now. one issue popped up twice. The EGR valve had something wrong with it. didnt really affect drivability, just meant the motor took longer to warm up. First time was under warrenty, second time wasnt. it cost us about 300? to fix.
other then that, its just been fluids so far. OH and the brakes pads JUST went in october. I think my dad has had them replaced now.

Well it's a half mile commute right now lol but I'll be moving out of state within the next year, so my commute will likely be 5-25 miles each way then. Not sure that I'll be buying something right away, but probably before Feb/March.
Good to hear that they're pretty reliable. Their engines tend to last significantly longer than gas engines, don't they? (Sorry, I'm diesel challenged)

the last, you are correct. diesels are all iron block, so they can take a lot of milage (look at the big-rigs you see on the roads. granted, they have stupidly over built motors, but they will literally have millions of miles on them) but the best part is the efficency. our A3 is rated @ 35MPG. Notice i say rated. IDK what the EPA does to get such a low milage. we consistently get over 45. I sometimes breaking into the 50s. its great when a 50$ tank of diesel gets you the 1000KM trip from toronto to montreal :P

Why does your stang need to be 2011+. I have been really into 2005-2010 GTs lately. The new 400hp GT is just too fast. The 4.6L GT can be easily made to sound better than sex, torquey and powerful without being overkill, and the engines have been around so long they are reasonably reliable. And they sell for cheap because everyone wants a 2011+.

75 out of an SV650 is almost unbelievably high. Not saying its not possible, as I know you to be a gentleman of the highest caliber; but not bloody likely...

ehh. I do a lot of highway cruising. and the commute to work is relativly painless as well.
now, once I get out on the twistys for the weekend. thats a totally different story.

I was actually looking into those more recently. They're starting to become much more affordable - I'm gonna attribute that to the 2015. The looks have grown on me too, but I'm really (extremely) concerned that I' d catch a chronic case of the mod bug and run my bank account into the ground D:
Also, I've really been eying on of these, for completely different reasons...
