I was racing Gran Turismo 6 online (something I don't do very often, for reasons that will be evident in the video below) a couple months ago and had an incredibly thrilling race with a bunch of noobs who don't know how to drive.

If you watch any of this video, at least watch until 1:43. Those first two minutes of the race were pretty hairy. Sorry for the video quality, I had to record my TV screen with my DSLR.

Do you think that when we get together we can play? I dont have a console and Ive been itching for some racing time on a big screen

For sure! I have a wheel and pedal setup. Splitscreen can be plenty of fun.

Do you play on xbox 360?

Darn I have a wheel and pedal setup for 360, I could have brought it

Without a hint of sarcasm, this is the best video quality I've seen of someone pointing their camera at their TV.

Haha, thanks! I tried to make it look the best I could with what I had available.

Refreshing that someone plays without a racing line assist. So much more enjoyable to play like this. If you think about it, putting any sort of line on is about the opposite of simulation.

Also surprising that despite being twitchy, people didn't appear to be outright idiots, bashing you into barriers etc. I liked how some of these guys passed you multiple times, only to spin it out at the next big turn. Impressive wheel control you have too. Good all-around video.

Last big race night I was in we formed an automotive gang (complete with designated enforcer) because of the sheer number of hits we took from behind/ at the first turn/ whenever trying to drive sensibly. This race looked so civilized by comparison.

The only assist I drive with is an ABS setting of 1. Most of the cars in the game have ABS, and the ones that don't, you can't really get a good feel to properly threshold brake like I'm used to (I've never owned a car with ABS). In fact, when I was actually driving this race, I was using the cockpit cam with no HUD. I try to simulate real life as much as possible when I play.

The reason I joined this lobby in particular is because it was labelled as "CLEAN" (you can see the name of the lobby at the beginning of the video in the lower-left corner). Tire selection was also unlimited, so if you aren't running a Racing Soft tire, you're automatically at a disadvantage. All that grip means people who don't know how to drive are sure to catch up with you once they inevitably overdrive their cars and spin.

Thanks for the wheel control compliment! I have this RX-7 set up pretty well and I run the Nordschleife quite a bit. GT6's force feedback has been improved recently, so it's feeling great.

Good lord the handling model looks arcady!

Also, does GT6 not have cockpit view?

Trust me, the handling model is not arcadey. This race had no limits on tire selection, so everyone in the race was using the stickiest tire in the game (which is really only meant to be used on full-on race cars). If you'd like, I can re-record the replay in cockpit view tonight so you can see the steering and throttle inputs.

This was a recording of the replay of the race. I drove the race in cockpit view, but you can't see what the other drivers were doing very well in cockpit view, so I switched to a chase cam for the replay. For example, I didn't even know the Miura spun behind me at 2:35 when I was driving.

Ah okay, that would explain the on rails handling, although the off track parts still seemed dubious.

I see, I never understand how people can race from chase cam.

I have to be pedantic... but "driving" the car from an invisible sky platform above and behind the car isn't much of a simulation either.

But! I definitely enjoyed the video. Seriously good looking for just pointing a camera at a TV.

I don't know how people can do cockpit cam. I feel like chase cam allows you to see the yaw since you can't actually feel it as if you were in the car, as well as make up for any missing peripheral vision.

As I've pointed out in other comments, this video is a recording of a replay of a race. When I was actually driving this race, I was using the cockpit camera with no HUD. The cockpit camera cuts out a lot of what's going on around the car (which was, ahem, a lot in the first two minutes), so I decided to use a chase cam for the replay.

I just thought it was funny ACES noticed the lack of a racing line, yet didn't mention anything about the chase camera angle in regards to how much of a simulation it is. Maybe he picked up on the fact it was a replay of the race. And maybe I wasn't read good.

That is odd, I feel like I can sense the yaw better in cockpit view, and that I tend to correct poorly in chase cam. It feels like I am a physics tic behind when in chase cam, like I'm trying to control it through a video camera screen.
