Why not offer a manual with the 3.6? Furthermore, why isn't the manual available with all the 2.5 models? And why no more XT? I need answers, Subaru.
Eh, I'd still probably drive one.

Of all the options the Subaru Outback has gained the one it lost is the one I miss the most. The wagon option that is..

1. Subaru has only offered a manual transmission with an H6 two times (XT6, 3.0R Spec. B) I believe. I may be missing some very rare offering in the 3rd generation Legacy. The H6 versions of their cars seem to have a low take rate, so a manual option would have only made that worse.
2. Subaru has been doing this since at least the 90s. For example, the original Outback SUS was not available in any trim with a manual, and you couldn't get a 99 Outback Limited with Dual Sunroofs and a manual. It comes down to take rate again. People who buy the higher trims generally want an automatic.
3. The XT was discontinued back in 2010 for the Outback, and 2013 for the Legacy. My guess is that for the Outback, the H6 and the H4 turbo overlapped enough in the previous generation that they decided to only build the H6. My guess for the Legacy is that they timed it with the 2013 refresh, and wanted to start cutting back on producing the 2.5 turbo engine. That engine was completely retired 2 model years later. I guess they didn't see enough of a market for the 296 hp 2.0 DIT Legacy that was introduced that year in Japan...
My personal opinion is that if you want your absolute perfect enthusiast's Subaru, you need to wait awhile, and build it yourself. All the parts are there, however, some assembly is required. Subaru is in the business to create the combinations that will sell the most and bring in the most money, which is understandable.

Wagon Outback is best Outback

I've never heard of the 3.0R Spec. B before. Thanks for the information! And yeah, I was thinking about it, and realized that tearing through the parts bin would be the only way to build what I'd like.

That option is still in there, at least for the fourth generation Outback. It just requires a suspension swap, and maybe some bumper and trim changes. It's not what most people want to do, but it is possible.

that's actually really nice, but not the same.

Wagon Outback is Only Outback.

At least Subaru still gives you the option, since most parts are compatible with each other.
The 3.0R Spec. B only made it to Japan and Australia, I believe. They are really nice .

Why not offer a turbo/twin turbo version of the flat 6? Put it in the Legacy and call it the GT STI Spec A or something. An adult STI with crazy power potential without giving up the low and midrange.

Hm. Now that would be a cool idea. I could see that format pushing 400 horsepower, too.

Haha that sounds like a recipe for quick head gasket/connecting rod bearing failure. Not to mention, some engineer thought that mounting an intercooler on top was a good idea...

Welcome to the symptoms of why I am no longer a Subaru owner, after having owned two simultaneously, and really enjoying both.
Boxer_4 is right... no manual H6s, aside from a rare combination XT6 in the 1980s, and the '04-09 generation Legacy having a 3.0R Spec.B option in the far east, but not imported into north america. There was a version of the Blitzen in that body style also that offered the 3.0R, but I am not sure if the Blitzen 3.0R was offered with the manual gearbox or not.
You can't get interior choices with paint color choices.
You can't get keyless start and entry on most models, at least not until very recently, I have stopped keeping up with the '14 and '15 models.
Their CVT and earlier 4EAT 4-speed automatics were FWD-biased.
Manual gearboxes are getting more and more rare in the Subaru lineup.
Breathe on the option list for an XV Crosstrek, and the 6-speed manual goes away, in favor of a CVT... and no more powerful engine option for that car... I still wish for a WRX/STI equivalent, with the FA20DIT engine, STI drivetrain, and an XV-like ride height with unpainted bottom cladding... rally cars aren't supposed to be low riders.
Forester was cool, but now is bland and boring. Forester tS (tuned by STI) doesn't cut it with a CVT gearbox... World Rally Blue paint is cool, but doesn't give it a complete pass.
Legacy has become just another Accord/Camry clone. I'd rather have a Lincoln MKZ with AWD, if I were still at all interested in Sedans.
Subaru has such potential, and has been missing the mark, and cutting corners to cut costs, that I barely even pay attention to them anymore.
The WRX concept being gorgeous, and the production car being bland, when Subaru KNEW that was a bait-and-switch was the last straw for me.

See, I'd still love to drive a Subaru. I just wish there were more options available in combination, and it didn't shoehorn you. Is that too much to ask, Subaru?

you mean like how might car mods did it?
