Ford Escort GT.
Crap compared to the Euro Fords and their fancy cossies and RS this is about as close as we got. 1.8 miata engine 127hp and 5 speed manual.
I think this would be a really good daily and really tempted to turn into some kind of rally wannabee cosworth mutant.
Sorry for the bad picture finding a nice photo of a white one that isnt riced out or in a junkyard is difficult.

I think they're cool too. the basemodel is shitty and dull, but 127 HP from a 1.8 is awesome.

I have a small thing for those as well, but given a choice, which would you rather own?

As a pizza delivery boy I can honestly say that I would straight up stomp a dude in the sternum for one of these.

It was a shitbox then and it has not aged well. Absolute garbage. If you are impressed with this car, then you must be 18 and have only driven two cars.

that hatch could fit enough pizzas to feed a rosei o donnel.

you make a very strong argument by insulting me and providing absolutely nothing to both your argument or the discussion.

I see what you did there Ford.

there are people who don't like that car('s grill)? Those are probably the kinds of people who fart on a crowded bus.

You can put the JDM Mazda BP turbo engine in these & have loads of fun. They share a platform with the 1st Gen Mazda Protege, into which my buddy put one of those engines with a Haltech E6k. It made 260whp without trying too hard. Best part? Nobody suspected it.

Just for you.

They were good enough for what they were. The GT version was kind of fun.

Almost as cool as a Mercury AIV

That's a first gen USDM Escort. Unfortunately, it is a completely different car.

I drove one in that teal color with the six spoke wheels (or 7? I forgot) and it was pretty fun! The dealership wanted $4,000 for it though. No thanks.

How about one with a lift?

There's one EXACTLY like that always parked near me, with this on the back:

You need to write about better cars or stop filling our feeds with rubbish.

Because it had a wing and stickers? No, it wasn't good or fun. If you were driving cars back then and drove this car and compared it with the competition, you would agree. Hell, Ford would agree. The car's driving dynamics were horrible.; The engine droned, brakes were ineffective, interior cheap, suspension mediocre, and the appearance was cheesy. High School girls drove it. If you ranked all the hot hatched of the time, it wouldn't even rank. It was never even invited to the car rag comparo tests.
It was a terrible car.

I just noticed this comment....You're kind of an asshole.

I'm 43, yes, I was driving cars back then, and before that as well. And what hot hatches of the time did you have in mind< the ever relaible VW rabbit? Those were usually in need otf being towed someplace? The Tercel? Dead reliable but unless you had the 4wd version pretty much a snooze. Honda Civic? Ditto. Just because your opinion is different than mine or Frank grimes, doesn't make yours any more authoritative. Mellow out.

The Golf was and is superior to the Escort. Drive them both then or today and you will agree. And the Escort was not a very reliable car. That was a key problem with the car. It did not have the road handling of a Golf nor the reliability of a Corolla, or the resale of a Civic. The Escort was what you got at the rental counter. It was cars like the Escort that created my bias and distrust of American cars which I have struggled to overcome. The same can be said for others.
It is not just my opinion. All the car rags, Cosumer Reports, etc. agreed. It was not a good car.
Here are econoboxes that were better than the Escort: Nissan Sentra and Pulsar, Honda Civic, Toyota Celica, Corolla, and Tercel, Isuzu i-mark, and Mazda 323. If you bought an Escort over any of those cars, your judgment and car knowledge was questioned.
Here are the econoboxes that the Escort was as good as or better: Plymouth Sundance, Chevy Cavalier and Pontiac Sunbird, Pontiac Le Mans, Mitsubishi Mirage, Suzuki Swift.
Regardless, it is a car that does not warrant an article on Jalopnik. No offense to Grimes. But he should write about something interesting. Not about a car that even Ford would admit was forgettable.

"it is a car that does not warrant an article on Jalopnik."
You are wrong there. It is a site about cars, good ones, bad ones all of them. If this site were only spending it's efforts on writing about the best of the best, then it would just be a site that reviews new cars. The latest the greatest and honestly, that's pretty boring. We could all visit Consumer Reports if that was all we were interested in.
No, it's about more than that. it's about cars and how they make you feel, good bad, nostalgic, whatever. You aren't forced to read any of it though. much like the TV, if you don't like what's on it, watch something else. Go read a different article. Don't impose your opinion on the content, just click something else. So what if the Escort was a crappy econobox? Some people had some fond memories of them. I actually drove the last generation Escort for a while while I was on a business trip. It wasn't sole to the public, it was just a fleet car, and you know what? it wasn't half bad. You still see them all over the place, so the quality was certainly there. I liked it better than other comparable cars. But that's just my opinion. Those people who drove their escorts know exactly what they had, and how they were. Those are who Frank was writing for. If you don't like Escorts, fine, run on over to the samba and have a VW party there. I'm pretty sure they won't mind.
The main thing is, mellow out. It's not meant as a personal attack on you if the article you are reading says something you don't like.

I would be happy to read and comment on an article about a particularly bad car or a list of terrible cars. Bad car lists are a favorite topic of car nuts. But mediocre cars? How about an article of a Chevy Corsica? Nobody cares. The other problem is that these articles are demanding our attention because they are included in news and social media feeds. Our time and attention is valuable. It is irritating when these valuable resources are consumed with topics of mediocrity. If Mr Grimes was brave enough to post it, he should be brave enough to accept the criticism. I certainly don't take offense at any of this.
I agree with the rest of your post. It is well written. You should write some of the articles on Jalopnik and Opposite Lock.
