At least, I think it was the original motor. On a very related note, I love working on the Jeep, it's so easy. Lots o' room in the engine bay, and the best thing is there's so much ground clearance that you don't need to put it on a jack to work underneath it.

The starter is one of the things that's - oddly- somewhat harder to change on the Land Rover Series II/IIa.
John Cleese voice: "This is Mr. Starter of Solihull. Mr. Starter has learned... how not to be seen. He could be anywhere - on the far side of the engine, underneath, or mounted to the bellhousing backwards. However, we happen to know - he's behind the exhaust pipe."
Yep, you have to reach up behind the exhaust pipe from underneath, after turning the steering wheel all the way to the right, then take loose two bolts, then basically do a three-point turn acrobatic manuever to get it out in stages.
I am very good at this. This is partly because I had a bad starter lead that I thought was the starter, and partly because when I first rebuilt my starter, I didn't get the nut on the retainer quite right, and lost pieces down into my bellhousing...

The exhaust pipe got in the way of one of the nuts ever so slightly but only because I used a long ratchet. Other than that it was sooooooper easy. It's right there when you go under the car, you can see it top center in the second picture.

I don't like the new starter. It sounds wrong, the pitch is way too high.

You can see from this pic that they were struck with some "cleverness" when designing the setup for the Rover. Long stroke crank - > wide crankcase - >put starter above point of greatest width. GENIUS.
The nuts aren't that hard if you have a ratchet with 18" of extension for one of them, but the actual pulling of the starter out of the hole is interesting. That's because it looks like this:
Wayyyy into the bellhousing.

It's like we have the same garage. A neon and a Jeep.
Good Combo, with only one flaw.
Chrysler.
