Attention Jalops and Opponauts. A Question of The Day has been proposed to us by editor emeritus Raymond P. Wert Esq III, pictured here:
He is in need of a new car! Surely we can help him find a perfect car that is fitting of the Jalop lifestyle.

Maybe you should petition Holla-Holla-Hardigree and TOkulski for a Question of the Day on "What Car Should Ray Wert Buy?" Only rules:
- Something uniquely me/Jalopnik
- Under $10K (preferably lower)
- 4x4
- I need a back seat / room for the girl and the dog
- Cargo space / utility space
- Working A/C and heat
- Nice interior (have to take clients out and wear a suit every once in a while) a good radio/bluetooth would be nice but not necessary, I can install after purchase
That's pretty much it.
For reference, his previous super Jalop car was a Jeep Liberty; for those who don't remeber the Liberty looked something like this:

Cheap and many low-ish mileage examples available pretty much everywhere. That or cheap Panther and do a manual swap because you are a true Jalop right? Yes, do that instead, manual V8 TownCar. I'll bring the beer and pizza, when should we come over to help build that beast?

Another requirement: Large exhaust tips.

Let's find him a good one!

First Gen Nissan Xterra with the supercharged VG33 V6

I'm not sure the Liberty is nice enough. I do have a soft spot for them though.

FAWK YES.

Off beat manufacturer? Check.
4x4? Check.
Odd engine with boost? Check.
First Aid Kit in the hatch for "Dragoning boo-boos"? Check.
Designed by a Woman? Check.
Manual option? Check.
Could this be the most Oppo 4x4 ever?

Quite possibly.
![]() 11/13/2014 at 09:14 |

This requires further clarification - WHY does he want 4x4? Occasional offroading? Snow? Just cuz?

He does not have the Liberty anymore, hence the need for a new car.

Maybe the Subaru advertisements have seeped in to his brain.

I get the impression that he actually wants a wrangler, but wont admit it. BUY A WRANGLER RAY!

i remember when the reviews for this came out, one of them was something like "proof that not everything supercharged is fast" it still makes me laugh.

Driving to the mountains for skiing (snow), occasional light off-roading (3-5 on the Moab scale), light (2,000 lb.) towing, preparation for the zombie apocalypse.

To be fair, I used to own a YJ Wrangler along with a CJ, and an XJ. I have a soft spot for the Wrangler and am seriously considering one.
![]() 11/13/2014 at 11:58 |
|
have you looked at a WJ or WK grand Cherokee?
![]() 11/13/2014 at 11:59 |
|
What do you think of the Escape Hybrid? I know it's not very Jalop, but you are in LA and all... I have friends with two of them and they are great ski vehicles. Nice enough inside and all. I see used 05 and 06s in the $6000 range.
![]() 11/13/2014 at 12:05 |
|
I also used to own a YJ Wrangler, a ZJ Grand Cherokee, and an XJ Cherokee prior to the Liberty daily driver.
Also, that's not what my Liberty looked like. I had a Renegade in black with Mopar skid plates, Hella light bar on top, and BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KOs on Pro Comp wheels.
Also, there's an "e" at the end of my first name. Little known fact.
![]() 11/13/2014 at 12:09 |
|
I used to own a ZJ Grand Cherokee, but I'm not really interested in one even one of the newer WJ or WKs. I'd much prefer a Wrangler.
![]() 11/13/2014 at 12:10 |
|
I meant to say "ZJ" here, not "CJ." I have not owned a CJ, nor do I plan on ever owning a CJ. Mostly because I'd like to not die on a highway.
![]() 11/13/2014 at 12:11 |

You know, if you want interior style, you could get a nice FJ62 land cruiser. its not a "nice" interior in the modern sense but it oozes style.
that dash man! You could get a clean runner is so cal for $10,000 easy.
![]() 11/13/2014 at 12:13 |
|
I've never been a huge fan of the Escape. Also, NO HYBRIDS!
![]() 11/13/2014 at 12:13 |
|
A TJ would be nice, but it doesn't fulfill your backseat requirement...not really. And I think you would be hard pressed to get a JKU for 10,000 that isn't beat.
![]() 11/13/2014 at 12:14 |
|
That IS a nice interior. I meant I don't want rust flakes falling on my suit and seats with gashes and tears.
![]() 11/13/2014 at 12:14 |
|
Yeah, a JKU would be PERFECT, but you're exactly right I can't find any in that price range.
![]() 11/13/2014 at 12:15 |

dude, its southern California you can find rust free examples all day down there.

You'd be surprised.

Sounds good. I've never been a big fan of the Escape either, but there's nothing specifically bad about them, plus I can never figure out who will like a vehicle or not so I figured I'd offer it up as an efficient, LA-like suggestion with AWD. But no hybrid is fine too, I completely understand that.
![]() 11/13/2014 at 12:22 |
|
Raymonde like A La Mode? That's friggin' sweet.
![]() 11/13/2014 at 12:29 |
|
That diesel high roof is a RHD located in Vancouver. No way in hell am I going to be able to title that here in California. But it sounds awesome.
I'd be interested to see if that V8 manual can pass smog in California.
But that '89 FJ looks promising.
And the '85 was sold for $6,000.

keep an eye out on that classified section, its gold. That's how I found my cruiser. I've got some hardcore land cruiser family in Torrance too, I'll have him keep an eye out if you are interested.
![]() 11/13/2014 at 12:31 |
|
I appreciate throwing out the idea but yeah, I just... there's something about the looks of the Escape that bug me.
Also, I want real lockers, not AWD.
![]() 11/13/2014 at 12:31 |

By all means! I love FJ40s and FJ60s.

3rd Gen Hilux Surf.
Its unique.
REALLY turns heads.
Sparks conversation about vehicles.
Can be had with a diesel
Hilux Surf SSR-G are the best trimmed 4runners money can buy
Built like a tank/toyota/stone
I've fought the "There must be something better" fight for a while and its true, the right answer to the body on frame SUV is 4runner.
