You know those Russians videos, where they video all kinds of crazy shit? I find a lot of the footage quite amusing, but I need a DVR in my cars to protect me from the fucking cops. Two incidences:
A year ago I was driving down an on-ramp and merged into traffic, I was driving the speed limit. Cop pulled me over, and I'm not making this up, said: "damn, that car sounds awesome. I was standing outside my cruiser when you came down the on-ramp, love the sound of your car" Ok officer, why did you pull me over? "You're driving 15mph over the limit". No, I was not. I saw you when I came down the on-ramp, why would I speed? Cop: "I'm writing you up for speeding" Why? Did you user radar or laser? Cop: "Nope." Where you pacing me then? Cop: "Yes" And how fast was I going? Cop: "Not 100% sure, but I'm writing you up for 15 over. I'll go easy on you, I could double the ticket because it's a construction zone." He loved my car, but gave me a speeding ticket for no reason. At that point I can take some time off work, fight for my rights in court, and lose. Because the cops word carries more weight than mine. Arrest-me-red Porsches induce stupid cop behavior
A month ago I'm tooling down the highway @ 11pm minding my own business and get pulled over. I was completely confused, had no idea what I could have done to get pulled over. Cop claimed I was driving 16 over the speed limit, I completely disagreed with him. I was in the middle lane with cars passing me on the left and right, there were plenty of other folks going a lot faster than I was. So why me? Two years ago I swapped out the stock bulbs on the license plate light to LED's, cuz I like them. Cop finds the lights distracting, but can't write up a fix it ticket because there's no law against having LED lighting. So, my license plate (that is much easier to read) is an annoyance, here's a ticket. Prick. I talked with a lawyer, he said he might be able to get the ticket reduced, but not thrown out. And yeah, his fee was $600 to fight the ticket. It seems that the cops don't care for Jetta TDI's either
So, I need DVR's in my cars so I can stop this ongoing extortion. I would like something small/stealth that will take vids from the front of the car (perhaps mounted on my rear view mirror) and another camera recording my speedometer. I have a GoPro, I want something smaller and totally stealth so it doesn't look like shit and won't get stolen. It needs to be record well day or night, and cabin temperature doesn't throw it off. I'm going to use these videos as evidence next time I'm pulled over. I've been on Amazon for days now, I'm totally confused. What would my fellow Jalops suggest??

Cobra makes DashCams that record GPS location and speed. Their actual video quality is about average as far as any dashcam goes, and you need to use the Cobra software to see the location/speed data, but it's a viable option for you. They also come small enough to hide by the rearview mirror as well.
I have a cheapy dash cam that gets the job done, but for your needs, I would look into the Cobra ones.

That your red Cayman? Paint it silver. Red + Porsche = unwanted attention & assumptions.

Ugh. No accountability, and entirely too many cops. They're just a revenue collection agency at this point.

I'd pick up a mini 0803 dashcam, it records GPS location (if desired), speed (if desired), and nice video. It's about 90ish bucks, super small, and is a pretty nice all around camera. I picked one up recently for my FoST and love it!

I like Guards Red on a Porsche, besides, it was the exhaust note that got me a ticket..

Honestly, your first mistake is arguing/disagreeing with a cop.
Just say thank you, take the ticket, and take it to court. You have a 0% chance of improving things by conversing, and probably a 50% chance of always making it worse.

I love Guards as well, it's one of my favorite 911 colors, but it's also a cop magnet.

fair enough, so how did a white Jetta get me a ticket too??? With the cruise control on, set at the speed limit? Oregon cops don't differentiate, they're out to make money

Ah, Oregon! You should have said so, I understand completely.

I expect every car maker to provide cams front and rear and realtime data re: engine speed, brake application and speedometer readings. All of this could be on a hard drive downloadable on a USB cable.
Backup cams already operate on a lot of cars, dash cams could be installed where nobody can even see them.

I was polite and respectful to the officers, in both cases I was totally confused as to why I was pulled over. Hard not to ask why when the reason(s) are not obvious to me, I was driving the speed limit. I paid both tickets because I know the courts will side with the police every time, and I have a very busy work schedule that includes weekly travel. If I'm going to fight tickets I need evidence to support my claims, so I need technology on my side.

This one looks good

Using GPS it records your speed as well as date & time. That would work! Need to figure out mounting options..

That's one of the ones I was looking at last night. If you can find more pictures of it, I'm sure you can rig something up for around the rearview mirror.
Good luck!

The advantage is the date/time/speed is stamped on the video. That should be perfect as a defense in court. The only thing I have to figure out is how to use their dash cam software on my Mac (worse case I use Bootcamp and run the program on a Windows VM). I'm gonna hold off til Black Friday and see if there's deals to had on this, I'll buy two or three of them.

I think I'm going to pick one up myself too. Have you read through the reviews? The only thing I noticed was that some people are not buying actual Cobra ones, so you just need to watch out and make sure you don't get the wrong one.
Instead of using Bootcamp for Windows, look into Virtualbox. It simply means that you don't have to mess with the partitioning, and if something goes wrong with it, it's totally sandboxed to the virtual machine.
