3rd time bringing my car back to the same place so they can honor my appointment to get the snows changed out on the Mercedes. Drop it off, say take all day guys. Get a call 4 hours later. "Sir your snow tires are one size narrower than the sticker on your door specifying the tire size. As an inspection station we cannot install tires of a different size because it wouldn't pass". Grab my official inspection manual where it says tires are inspectable no more than 2 sizes either way, bring it over. They still tell me they don't want to be liable. Seriously, fuck you. You could have given me a pass for eating up my yesterday at noon appt (too busy, hour behind after I got there), my yesterday at 5 (too busy, can't do them today after I got there) and my today all day appt. And snows are better when they are narrower anyways dumbasses. 205 vs. 215

man am I glad I don't have to worry about inspections anymore.
(fun fact- the Montego passed inspection in the late 90's in NJ)

Go run to harbor freight, pick up a Jack and jack stands and a torque wrench with the right size lugs. All together you should be in $70ish, and do it yourself. Then get drunk.

When I was still in my brace I brought my car to the shop with a tire worn to the steel and a tire to replace it. They said they wouldn't because there was a little chunk take out of the the tread. Dafuq? They had to circle it for me to be able to see it. They said they didn't want to be liable but conceded that the tire I had brought was in better condition than the one on.

I'd like to refer to this as the "trees sneezing" theory of rules-management. The paternalistic and often wrong sentiment that complicated rules are impossible for hires to learn, so it's better to teach them something utterly false that matches what they need to do 95% of the time. Your experience and Luc Allain's are no accident: somebody made the conscious decision to miseducate the employees of the chain.
This crops up also at auto parts stores regarding code reading/clearing and other issues.

I am a state inspector. Put those tires on dang shop! If they don't want to be liable, put them on and let you sign something. It's not like you'll ever go back to that shop

yeah I was a state inspector too in this state. Actually you should be plenty informed on this. 00 Merc E320 4M, 205/55/R16 vs 215/55/R16 on a 7.5 rim. They have to be joking.

I do not miss stringent inspection states.
I know I've mentioned it before, but its one of the things I love about NV. I can pull up to the inspection station riding on a milk crate with home made suspension, as long as the engine outputs within spec; Pass.

Funny story: My Benz is supposed to have, IIRC, 205/I forget/R15s, and passed inspections for years with 215/I forget(wider)/R15s on. Harder for the old diesel to push, of course, so I went back to factory spec from what the previous owner had, but still.

My tires were done, so I ordered a new set of Michelin Pilot Super Sports from Costco. When I placed the order with the dude in the tire center he asked about the make, model, and wheels on the car, he even went out to the parking lot to take a look at the car. The price quoted was better than anywhere else (including Tire Rack), the installation would be $60. Done, order 'em up.
They called a few days later, the tries were in and if i dropped by they would install them for me the same day. It was a Saturday so off I went to get the deed done. When I got there they took one look at my car and said "we're not installing tires on a Porsche". Huh? I paid for the installation dude!! Nope, because liability. I pointed at the banner on the wall that claimed they had state-of-the-art installation equipment. I also asked why they would sell me the tires and installation knowing it's a Porsche, then refuse to do so? Sales guy's fault, he should know better.
I asked them how the hell am I going to get the tires installed, I don't have the equipment. Service manager call the Porsche dealer and (predictably) they couldn't do it for at least two weeks; he asked where the dealer sends cars when they're too busy. H&M Motorsports, a block away from the Porsche dealer. Costco manager calls H&M Motorsports and they say sure, we can do it on Monday, $120. Costco refunded me the $60 installation charge, and gave me a gift card for $60 so I wasn't out of pocket. Next problem: how in the hell do I get four tires in my Porsche and take them to H&R? No worries, Costco drove the tires over and were waiting for me Monday morning when I finally got the tires installed.
Clusterfuck, because lawyers.. same reason Jiffy Lube won't change my oil for me (I DIY anyway). It all worked out in the end and to Costco's credit they bent over backwards to help me out, still left me shaking my head.

I would recommend getting a set of dedicated winter wheels. During my time working at a Toyota dealership, I've noticed a couple things.
1 - Since winter rubber is softer, sometimes the bead will get mangled during mount/dismount. I've never seen it happen, but I've seen tires come in that were pretty bad.
2 - You save a lot of labour and time. I think we charged $20 to change and balance a tire. That's $80 every season change. The $280-380 that you spend on (new) rims adds is more than made up with the money you're not spending on changing the tires every time. Get a set off of craigslist, and you're golden.
So unless you for some reason store stuff inside your tires (yardwork tools maybe?), it just makes sense to me.

yeah that is how I usually roll anyways. I ended up getting a mounted set and selling the loose ones!
