Phoenix Internatioal Raceway is a one-mile oval. The race is 312 laps and 312 miles long. 312 miles is very close to 502 kilometers.

Oh. odd. I thought the names of the races were always based on the mileage (Daytona 500, Coca Cola 600, etc.) How did Phoenix get messed up?
EDIT: found this on wiki: "The Quicken Loans Race for Heroes 500 is a NASCAR Sprint Cup stock car race held at Phoenix International Raceway in Avondale , Arizona . It is one of four NASCAR races run with a length measured in kilometers; the The Profit on CNBC 500 at Phoenix is one and the two road course events ( Toyota/Save Mart 350 and Cheez-It 355 at The Glen ) are the others."
