So instead of writing the Fantasy WRC preview I spent the weekend trying to figure out why my brake lines are now full of air (still a mystery). Ergo I forgot to write the preview and we're doing this super short. Y'all know how this game goes. All I can really add is NOOOOOOO! MIKKO! DON'T LEAVE US! Seriously, he may well be the best WRC driver to never earn a title (please, feel free to discuss this point).

He never won for the same reason that Malone/Stockton never won against Jordan/Pippen, among other Great vs. Greatest matchups. He was, most of his career, up against the man who had to be the best rally driver of all time, Sebastien Loeb.

Exactly, which is why I feel so bad he never earned a title. At his peak he was a giant amongst men, in an era when there was a full on titan. Hell, he finished on the podium in all but one event in 2009 and lost the title by a single point simply because his hood latch broke during the final rally and the minute he lost removing the hood bumped him from leading the rally to finishing second. No one else ever got that close to Loeb. I did the math once, and if you were to count every time he beat everyone but Loeb as a win he'd have 34 career wins and four titles. More than anyone except Loeb.

May the power of Latvala's black magic reverse time and convince Hirvonen to stay with us! God I'll miss this man. Never met him, but he always seemed like such an awesome guy.

He was definitely the one I liked the most as far as personality went. Smart and focused, but relaxed and fun as well. And straight up ridiculous when he wanted to be. Whether it was his downhill soapbox barbecue grille or his 2012 travel videos with Citroen. He was a goofball and he wasn't afraid to show it.

Another season comes to an end, and all I wish for is for Kris Meeke to get another podium to really secure his spot in the Citroen works team. I tell you, that boy has got some serious talent (if he's not busy rolling his car in a non-pressure situation).

Well said. A young Mikko today would probably be able to beat Ogier on a good day, but he had the problem that the universe gifted the world with the driving talent of Le Grande Monsieur Loeb when he was at his career high.

If Latvala didn't crash on the final superspecial in Rally Poland, Mikko would've won the title in 2009. Also, Marcus Grönholm was one point behind Loeb in 2006, so he got as close as Mikko did.
Also, as I proud Norwegian I have to say that the only driver to beat Loeb over a full WRC season, is Petter Solberg in 2003.

Yes, but Gronholm only got within a point because Loeb missed the final four events, whereas Mikko got within a point on his own merit. Even though Gronholm finished the season within a point of Loeb, Loeb had the title won at the end of Rally Australia, with two rounds left in the bag.
And this is not meant at all to discredit Solberg, who absolutely deserved his title, or to offend a proud Norwegian, whom I greatly respect, but one could argue that Loeb wasn't yet fully matured in 2003, as that was his first full season in the series.

1. it is not that latvala will come in first, it is that everyone else will finish after him. they will have believed themselves to have gone faster, but JM (master of continuum loops and time vortex-generation) will have had them inching along at a crawl as measured by the officials.
2. Meeke, in a podium so nationalistic that scotland rejoins the UK. wait, that vote didn't pass? fuck. This is going to be so nationalistic that scotland will vote to secede just so it can vote to return to the UK immediately thereafter.
3. hirvonen and jalad, at tanagra
4. Mikkelson, after bribing Ogier with fine norwegian cheeses to stay out of contention
5. Kubica! in a startling show of form that reaffirms his quality, charm, and skill behind the wheel that we all know is there seriously this guy is great really we all love him because he's great at driving and he will be winning any minute now I swear no I'm not crying
power: Jari-Matti, though officials wonder why it appears his tires are less worn than his competitors. It's almost like he covered less distance than everyone else, though he ran the same course

That's true, but Marcus still got as close as Mikko. And who knows what might had happened if Loeb didn't break his arm.
And though 2003 was his first full season, Loeb had driven several events in 2002 as well, winning one and getting his win taken away in another. He also won the JWRC Championship in 2001. You could argue that is was Citroen's first full season as well, and that Subaru had more experience and a championship-winning car. Still I think that those cars were level at that point, since Citroen had been testing the Xsara for years, first as a kit car and then as a WRC car.
