Just in time for winter, my friend and I realized there's a big ol' kayak hanging from inside the roof of his garage, and we should probably, y'know, use it.

Between the two of us, we've got a 2013 Civic sedan, 2007 Grand Marquis, and a 2014 Versa Note (hatchback). All three have bare roofs.

What is our best bet for transporting said kayak, as far as balancing cost vs. safety vs. not damaging the cars (or the kayak)?

Smart fortwo rockin' the kayak for your time.

Your safest bet is a Yakima or Thule rack system with some hull foam and good straps.

We have Yakima racks with good straps. Its also a 1 tonne truck so its a bit different than a car/hatch

Yes, several times per week! I just live a few hundred yards from the bay, though. ;)

Whatever solution you determine for mounting it, make sure you check everything after a few minutes out on the road. We've always used the factory rack for our vehicles - two ratchet straps over the middle, rope to tie down the front and back (to the factory tow hook works), and a length of rope over the top as a failsafe for the straps.

put a trailer hitch on the grandma and get a el cheapo harbor freight trailer. now you have a panther and a pickup truck in one. It will prove useful for a multitude of things.

It already has one, its fully wired up for a trailer connection too. I'm just concerned because I'd have to rent a trailer (I live in an apartment - no garage) and that's a LOT of length to have to negotiate. But it's probably the cheapest option.

Have you trailered much before? Its really not long especially with a little uhaul trailer. Thats a pain regarding the apartment. They make ones that fold up and stand vertical if you have an assigned parking spot.

I've never trailered before, I use my hitch to carry bikes on a rack.

you'll be fine. Watch a you tube video and then go practice backing up in a parking lot. ALWAYS WATCH YOUR MIRRORS going around turns to make sure you aren't about to clip something. Thats like 90% of it.
