Before I start, Air Canada would like to remind everyone that this was an Air Canada Express fight, operated by Jazz Aviation. This is what I've been told, as AC has already started throwing people under the bus.

Anyhow, on to the story. On Nov. 6th the Bombardier Dash 8-Q400 reported a blown tire during initial climbout from Calgary International Airport. Due to high winds in Calgary, the crew chose to divert to Edmonton International Airport and land with the blown tire. Now here is where things start to get interesting; The winds at Edmonton were very light. For those of you that fly, they were 290 @ 4kts. Pretty light. Shortly after touchdown in Edmonton, the aircraft's right main gear collapsed causing the prop to hit the ground, shearing the blades off. One blade actually sliced into the aircraft's fuselage and cabin, embedding itself in to the fuselage. Amazingly, no one was seriously hurt by the blade entering the cabin.

However, this all does seem a bit extreme for a seemingly routine emergency landing with a blown tire. I myself fly privately, and have flown commercially. This being an issue I have experienced in the past, the end result here is far from what I had expected.

For an added bonus, watch the first video in the linked news story. As soon as you hear the propeller slam through the cabin wall, it's followed by a scream then "WOOOHOOOO! THAT WAS FU#@ING SICK!".

Also a picture is now circulating of the damage up close. Again, how no one was killed, I have no idea.

Never have liked sitting lined up beside the prop or jets. This will be a hard thing to forget next time its the only seat available!

Great overview. That prop in the fuse is wild. Landing with a blown tire has been known to cause gear failure but the q400 seems to be getting a bad reputation with gear issues.

I know the Q400 has had a bad reputation when it comes to gear failures. However I believe Bombardier rectified this with a design change on the new build Qs. And I;m fairly certain all the Jazz DHC8-Q400s were built within the last three years.

It is worth noting, they found "A substantial amount of debris" on the runway it took off from in Calgary.

On a tour to the factory of the (then) DASH8, I could see how they reinforced that part of the fuselage with carbon fibre - not sure if they do that on the Q400s.

They also routed hydraulics on the very bottom of the fuse and redundant hydraulics on the very top - that way, a prob blade would have to cut the fuse in half to impact the hydraulics. Pretty cool I thought!
