The only thing on the dash that worked was the speedometer, and even that was iffy. Mechanically it was in tip top shape though, 4x4 even worked. And absolutely no rust or structural damage, and passed emissions. The dash was just too much for me to deal with for a first car. For somebody with a shop though... That thing is a goldmine for them. On the way to see it I saw this though:

SVO, yeah keep telling yourself that

You'd probably only have to put in a new gauge cluster, thats not a big deal. And I think the speedo is probably the only important gauge you need to drive around. Who cares about miles on a car like that?

Dude, the dash sold you away from it? In a low budget car, dash issues aren't uncommon. It isn't that big of a deal. It's all mechanical, it might just need a new gauge set.

that's a small issue considering the car has no rust and is in great mechanical shape. Rust is probably the number one problem cars of that vintage face, so it's not like rust free examples are all over the place.

You gotta realize how old these cars are, you aren't gonna find a perfect car that old. If you want easy, buy an Accord, not an AMC that's older than you are.

it's really not, considering that the car runs great and doesn't have any rust.

Fuel gauge is kind of important.

My mom also said no because in her mind anything that isnt a honda is a money pit, also she thinks it smelled funny. I let her influence me and now Im kinda pissed off at her

You certainly have the right to be. Kind of lame that she went through the trouble of viewing the car just to say no.

I shake my head in wonderment when I see cars with caved in rear bumpers. Obviously they are not good drivers and second, it is so easy to pop those back out without going to a body shop.

Damn man I know that feeling. My mom was like that when I was a teen, she didn't get the appeal of breathing new life into an older car and kept complaining that I should buy newer cars. The only reason I was able to get my jeep when I was younger was because my dad and uncles told her they'd help me. Next car you find you've just gotta back up your desire with facts upon facts to convince her!

Mechanically it was in tip top shape... no rust...

Just get new gauges. Easy and cheap fix. Even if you don't get new gauges, you still have a mechanically sound car. My first DD was a rusted YJ (with frame damage) and non-working gauges. When dealing with broken gauges, just don't drive too fast, estimate your speed, and shift when the engine sounds angry.

The dash thing is really a minor issue. the important parts were good according to you and all old cars smell funny I have a '93 323 and it doesn't stink but it smells off for sure.

between you and the rest of the oppo community I'm sure we could figure out the dash. I think maybe you should reconsider.

Did the odometer work? Trip odo is really the only working thing I need in a dashboard. I almost prefer when my gas gauge doesn't work, I don't trust them.

See, you're okay then. My Corvair doesn't have one. Or a working odometer, since I pulled the speedo cable. Or a working tach, because it doesn't have a tach. Or a temp gauge, voltage gauge, or oil pressure gauge because it also doesn't have any of those. My fuel gauge kinda works, but it only goes up to 3/4. Gauges are highly overrated.

If a gauge cluster is enough to turn you away from a car, I best suggest not looking at anything more than 20 years old that isn't made by Honda or Toyota.
