Reasonably handsome, non-bland luxury sedan with toys galore, good comfort and driving dynamics, reasonable reliability and MPG, holds value like any other Lexus/Toyota, and best of all, the straight six from a Supra sent to the rear wheels. I'm amazed they don't get more attention on here.

It doesn't get more attention here because it doesn't look like a Supra.

I've always liked them. Not so sure about cheap, like most lexus cars, they hold value pretty well with high miles.

They probably don't get much attention here because GS/IS/LFA aside, there has been no Lexus that has not been a lazy Toyota rebadge or a Merc knockoff. Not that I dislike Lexus, it's just my impression of their historical products.

My uncle had one after his 300SD. As far as I know he had zero issues with it.

I REALLY liked those. but as other said, they hold their value CRAZY well.

I like it.

Reasonably handsome
No. Unless by "reasonably handsome" you mean "atrociously fugly."

10/10 would DD for 20 minutes and then turn into a stupid drift car.

They're not first cheap like a high-mileage German car, but they're still reasonable.

I lol'd

I've gathered as much.

Oh right. And popular with the tuner/drift/stance/VIP crowd due to the fact that on top of all those things, it's apparently easy to tune. Like I said, Supra engine.

We got people all the time saying what a good-looking car it was, but I guess it's polarizing.

I have less strong opinions about Lexus as a company than I do about what brand toilet paper I buy. They honestly just bore the hell out of me.

Also, the white one that I posted has a TURBO FOUR-ROTOR ENGINE!!!!!!

I love those cars.

I'm with you. I honestly like these things a lot! I think the reason why they don't get enough attention here is a lack of a manual.

Good cars but i can't stand the headlights. The whole car looks quite dated. I'd rather have an older ES myself.

I love 'em—in fact, I'm pretty fond of every generation of GS. I could see one in my future...

Both of those things are sad when you think about it.

By all accounts a very good car. They also did it with a UZ (GS430). Available in Japan with the turbo Supra motor 2Z-GTE (Aristo V)

Could you get them in the USA with a clutch pedal?
![]() 11/06/2014 at 19:39 |

Not attached to the car.
![]() 11/06/2014 at 19:40 |

It doesn't get attention because it's a meh car. Pretty much an oversized RWD Camry. Not attractive, not that good to drive in stock form, not interesting. And the Supra I6 is only a 2JZ-GE, not even the good one. You could get the same engine in the IS300 chassis with a manual and less weight to lug around.

I always thought it was quite good to drive for what it was. And the engine wasn't the fastest, but it had a nice powerband.

ES is FWD though

Why yes, i have heard of amway, and no i dont want to try your new superfruit health drink.

I've hated it ever since it came out. The proportions are all wrong. It's trying to be swoopy and upright at the same time, and then inexplicably turns boxy for the too-stubby trunk. There's pretty much no surface detailing except the lights, but the headlights and taillights are misshapen blobs.
Some cars that I think look weird when they come out end up growing on me. The second-gen GS is not one of those cars.

I was actually looking at one of these on Craigslist earlier. Along with IS300s.
![]() 11/06/2014 at 21:53 |

I'm going to take that as a no, even though I have no clue what it means.
![]() 11/06/2014 at 21:55 |

Good luck finding a cheap one. As many people pointed out to me, depreciation was not this car's strong point.
![]() 11/06/2014 at 21:56 |
|
Considering the one I was looking at had like 225k on it and the seller wanted $6k. No, they do not depreciate AT ALL.

this is the official (not really) car of multi level marketers
![]() 11/06/2014 at 21:59 |

Its like a Land Cruiser sedan.
![]() 11/06/2014 at 22:01 |

Saw one of those with 255k on it and the seller was asking I think $6.5k for a late 80s model.
Toyotas hold their value too well.

Alrighty then.
![]() 11/07/2014 at 13:12 |

Good, reliable, cushy, and decently powered car. It's a bit dull and understated though.
![]() 11/07/2014 at 14:45 |

It does not have a Supra engine, a Supra has ITS engine. The 1st Gen Aristo (GS300) debuted with the 2JZGE and 2JZ-GTE in 1991. Supras with 2Js came in 1993.5. Same with the 2nd gen. It debuted the VVTi 2JZ-GTE.
The reason I didn't get one was because they're a bit ugly and you can't get them manual.
My mom had a 1st gen and it was smoooooooooooooooooooooooooth.
![]() 11/07/2014 at 14:47 |

Dually noted about the first part.
Lack of a manual is annoying, but not really surprising.
![]() 11/07/2014 at 14:55 |

non-bland
This is why we can't have nice things.
![]() 11/07/2014 at 14:58 |

Apparently, after some discussion, some people find it handsome, some find it hideous, while some don't find it anything. Never have I heard such mixed things about a car.
![]() 11/07/2014 at 19:42 |
|
Okay, okay. I've never noticed these before so I didn't know how old they were, but it's from the blandest time of all for motoring. Everyone from Lada to Ferrari was building their cars to look like a used soap bar. So claiming it was "non-bland" wasn't exactly truthful.
The engineering? Sure, it's a Lexus. A straight six with decent MPG, you say? Well, owning one would mean one fewer to look at with my own eyes...
![]() 11/07/2014 at 19:48 |
|
It was truthful inasmuch as I don't find it bland. Appearance is subjective.
And yes, you don't have to look at it while you're inside it.
![]() 11/07/2014 at 20:17 |

It's a freaking sweet car. It's one of the few vehicles I'd consider giving up stick-shifting to have.
This, the first IS300, the SC300/SC400 and the LS430, that was Lexus at its peak.

The GS is probably the best daily driver I can think of: Cheap, Reliable, Luxurious, Comfortable, RWD, decent power, decent dynamics... If only it wasnt so fucking ugly.
