This is amazing! And I still have a dirty air filter to change. I wonder if I'll get less with the new filter...hum.

I think I could get the same numbers if I babied the Jetta. The turbo is too damn addicting on that car.

Not bad at all, my best is 50, but I wasn't really trying. Mostly doing 80 mph over hill and dale with the family in tow.

I can imagine. Gotta try a diesel car once to see the difference with a gas car.

Your over here getting 60mpg, while I amuse myself on how low I can get mine to be. That is a rare thing, but I have before. Though, my record of 2 wasn't tried, it happened due to circumstance.

How can you be amused by such low MPGs!? I can't anymore :(.

Imperial or Superior (American) gallons?

US Gallons or Imperial, though?
The Gallons they use in Britain are slightly larger

Thinking of it, there needs to be a Diesel-electric hybrid car. I wonder how low the consumption will go. Maybe something like a Volt, but diesel. The engine assists at higher speeds.

Merican MPGs!

It's US. I made sure to use a US gallon converter.

I've had the same thought and wondered why they aren't releasing a diesel hybrid yet. After searching on google, I got the answer that building a diesel car is expensive already and making it hybrid would make them expensive to buy right now. When the tech will be less expensive, maybe we'll see diesel hybrids. But it's still to see...can you imagine the torque too???
![]() 11/05/2014 at 20:45 |

Cost is understandable, although low-end torque will be insane. Electric motor's instant torque + Diesel's low-end Torque = crazyness.

I'd buy one if they release one and make sure they release a manual hahahaha.

Wow! That is impressive. (what do those numbers mean in American?)

VW should drop a diesel into their Jetta hybrid. They already have the R&D for the engine, and have a Hybrid drivetrain to mate it with, so why not experiment? Only transmission option I saw for the Hybrid was a 7 Speed DSG.

3.9l/100km = 60.3 US MPG.
the 8.4l/100km was a really short run, so that's why it's so high.
I had 1085 km left to do on my full tank.

*slaps self* 3.87 liters per gallon. Duh!! You stupid American. I have a friend in Edmonton. His last name is Gallon. They call him "4 Liter".

XL1 is a diesel electric hybrid.
![]() 11/05/2014 at 21:59 |

it certainly is, but the issue is, that it's not mass produced, or a "regular" car for the masses, for that matter.

LOL! hahahahhahahaha poor him...

So I took a look on VW USA's website. And it's really hard to get a feel for the engine prices. For example the difference between a 1.8T SEL and TDI SEL is $1030, likewise the hybrid SEL is $4865 more than the 1.8T SEL. The hybrid uses a 1.4L N/A engine so the diesel could save some $$ by downsizing, but it still needs a turbo, intercooler ect.
To me it seems like the hybrid system could be a $2500 to $3000 extra cost to the TDI. This would make the entry level model about $24,400. That's not a bad price at all. But one thing to consider is that new diesel after treatment does not do well in low temperature drive cycles, like city driving, short trips ect. There's simply not enough temperature for regens to complete. So IMO to make a hybrid diesel you want to use the diesel more like a generator so that you can keep the load constant and maintain temperature. This means a larger battery pack and larger electric motor. Still I think they could keep the S model below $28,000.

I hit five miles short of that in a beat up, broken 1990s car! Come talk to me when you get 65!

Dammit...how reliable was it? HA!!!! CHECKMATE!
![]() 11/06/2014 at 23:34 |
|
Reliable enough to fall from a height and mileage most cars will never reach.
Also, reliable enough to only fail once the water pump seized, while low on oil, following the warped crankshaft causing the harmonic balancer to eat into the engine block plus God knows what else was wrong with it.

Modern parts + Forgotten engineering = Fuel Economy.
Right now Mitsubishi is carrying what remains of that engineering torch, although it still doesn't hold a candle to the beauty of the Geo Storm. Still one of the lowest drag coefficients of any car on the road.

More on Oppo FB. I don't go here anymore because of the lack of time I have with having a bipolar gf and the fact that I still mourn the lost of my NC...It hurted me so good that I tossed aside everything car related except for work. That's mostly why you guys don't see me anymore.
