Some of you may remember a while back in the long, long ago when we were discussing Zondifying a Merc s600: !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

Kinja'd!!!

So, I have an idea and I'm trying to figure out whether rebuilding one of these engines makes any sense or whether it would require highly specialized technicians to work on. Could I take it to "any" reputable shop to be rebuilt or is that just a bad idea?

To be clear, I just want the engine. But I want it to be newish when swapped into sumpin else. The whole car can be had for under $10k so why not just find one in crappy shape and redo the engine?

Let me know what you think.

well, 10K for the car, and then 10K JUST for the headers. plus, who knows how many sensors, ECU, trans stuff (if you wanna swap it) and so on.

Forget the headers, this is a swap and those headers won't fit in the new car. I just want to know if an engine like this can be rebuilt by a reputable engine builder or whether I'll have to go through Mercedes at thrice the price.

You could go to reputable builder. But keep in mind most reputable builders may only deal up to a MAX of 8 cylinders. after 8, this get waaayyyy more complicated, esp when it comes to electronics. A system that would work for an 8 would have to be modded to work for a 12, or run 2 6 systems, one for each bank. it gets nasty.

I'm hoping the electronics that are in the car the engine is coming out of can be used on my application. I wouldn't want them to have to reconstruct that from scratch. Is that a reasonable assumption, or do you think there is just too much to be done?

I'm kinda of 1/2 and 1/2 on it.....on one side, it SHOULD...but on the other, how many sensors and other systems plug into that car? adaptive cruiser control, (as an example) A?F, O2 sensors, and so on. If you tear stuff out, will it throw a code? I dont have the knowledge to give you a positive answer, you should probably consult AMGtech or do some more research.

I'll be researching, I just was looking to see if anyone could tell me what I don't know I don't know. This way, my research will be more efficient.

that is really the only thing I would worry about. everything else should be good to go.

WORST CASE you have to a 2 ECU car. Which has the advantage if 1 ECU burns out, you can still get home on 6 instead of 12.

I volunteer my time and effort to Megasquirt a V12 Merc engine. Aspiring computer/electrical engineer over here with plenty of ECU experience and quite a few hacked together MS setups under my belt. This would be so awesome.

Grrrr. I hate the way the comments work these days. I miss the simple days when everyone just got spammed with notifications.

Pensacola, up in the Panhandle. You could definitely run this off of two Megasquirts, even share sensor data between the two of them, or go a bit more complex and try to have individual banks controlled separately to minimize error. I am decently sure you could modify a single MS system to handle the full 12 cylinders as well with a little bit of hardware and code. Another option would be to run the engine as a wasted spark, two injection per cycle 6 cylinder with the MS thinking it's dealing with an inline 6 and just run two injectors/coils off of one signal.

Plenty of options that wouldn't be that hard and still way cheaper than going to something more robust that is made for it out of the box.

this sounds promising. It would be amazing to get this worked out. That engine should be swapped into all the things

It's definitely doable. This is making me want to get back into tuning really badly.
