Fantastic! Where were you sitting, and what is your set up?

I'm sitting at Turn 6 the entire weekend. I'm using a Canon 60D with a Canon 100-400 mm and Tamron 17-50 mm.

I have the same 17-50. May I ask what mm you took these shots at?

Somewhere between 135mm and 150mm.

Do you have a press access or is that from the grandstands with a big-ass zoom lens? Great job!

The reason I ask is that I've got a Tamron 70-200, and I've wondered if I would ever get close enough to get a good shot. I live in Austin, but have yet to go to the race. I wouldn't want to schlep all the gear around if I couldn't get good results. Yours look fantastic, and at those distances, I think I might be successful. If it's not too much trouble, I'd love to know your settings.

I was able to rent the 100-400 for the weekend for only 70 bucks. The 70-200 would probably work, but you'd have to figure out a good and semi-close place to sit. I've seen quite a lot of people carrying that lens around this weekend. Here are my settings:

I will say though, the 100-400 can start to get pretty heavy after lugging it around most of the morning haha

I imagine it does get heavy! I've got one of these Black Rapid Metro straps that I use with the 50D/70-200. It works great, and I've carried it all day at an air show with no problems.

I may have to investigate renting. And those settings are right about where I would have suspected them to be. I usually shoot in Av mode, and while I may have backed down the aperture to about f/9, we would have ended up in about the same place. I like your choice of ISO 100. I would have thought that a faster shutter would be preferable, but your shots look great.

So close, yet so far... If Kinja hadn't shit the bed this weekend, I think a lot more meet-ups would have happened. Hope you had a great time!

Haha yeah it was an incredible weekend. We should have an Oppo meet up at next year's GP!
