This morning, highway 400 in Ontario was shut down. Why?

Because another idiot dump truck driver was going down the highway with his box in the upright position.

This in turn caused him to hit and damage one of those sign structures that go over the highway... causing it to be on the brink of collapse.

THAT in turn forced police and the MTO to close the highway for safety reasons.

Why don't these dump trucks have alarms or gear engagement lockouts for when the box is up? Why are dump truck operators so bloody incompetent that they drive down the highway without realizing their box is up?

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

And this same thing happened not too long ago with another dump truck on the QEW... and it damaged a bridge bad enough that it had to be closed:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

But the difference in THIS case is the dump truck was able to keep going and the police are asking the public to provide information.

I hope they catch whoever it was.

We had almost the same thing happen about a month ago here in Detroit. It's getting ridiculous!

He hit it with so much force that Ohio DOT had to shut the highway (This is a main artery for the city of Cleveland btw) down for a whole weekend so they can rip it out.. It never got replaced because ODOT didn't think anyone would be this stupid to destroy a Ped Bridge and it isn't in the budget..

I have seen a great deal of very bad driving from dump trucks over the years in the US. I got a chance to talk to a good friend who is also a commercial driver and asked him about the deal with the dumps. His answer: follow the money.

There are a lot of great dump drivers, but the job has some aspects that attract a good number of bad folks. Dumps are very often paid not by hour, not by mile, but by the ton or cubic yard, i.e. haulage. This means if you haul more crap faster, you get paid more. If you're a bit of a sociopath and go way too fast and work long hours (co-morbid with substance abuse, sadly), you can make a lot of money. Unlike longer haul trucking, dump haul gigs are usually local so there are few if any LEO checks and the trap spots are known. So, people with questionable ethics and a love of money are strongly incentivized to throw out all the safety regs, fake or ignore driving logs and hours, get hopped up, overload, speed, and take a home a big payday. The consequences of a screw-up (wreck or getting busted) are very high, but the probability is not high in their view, so they find it an acceptable risk for them and they don't care about the risks to those around them (remember, can often attract greedy sociopaths).

Moreover, the execs running large construction operations using dump truck brigades are also strongly incentivized (large bonuses) to get it done faster and cheaper by any means, and excavation is often the longest and least predictable construction phase. Maybe even illegal means, as long as they're not caught (those bonuses can get really big). That can make the less honest managers/supers/execs push/incentivize the dump drivers to do dangerous or illegal things (haul X loads today, and you get $200, refuse and you'll never get a hauling gig in this county again). Throw enough money at people, and too often too many will do some pretty bad things.

Don't know if gear engagement lockouts is the way to go, since it can be necessary to drive with the box all the way up to properly dump a load. But definitely an alarm if you hit like, 30km/h, or a governor or something. I find it hard to believe that someone wouldn't notice the change in COG and aerodynamics of having the box all the way up... I'd blame city drivers, but where I grew up in rural Manitoba people occasionally would run into the side of a B train hauling grain, gravel, whatever, and have their cars dragged for miles before the trucker noticed.

You know how many terrible car drivers there are out there... perhaps we should be grateful that truck drivers as a rule are far more competent with their large machines that take much more management, and just chock it up to everyone having a bad day every now and again.

For gear engagement lockouts, I'm thinking all gears except maybe 1st or 2nd get locked out when the box is up.

I can see an alarm working as well... but I can also see an alarm getting disabled by the operator. Mind you I think gear lockouts can be defeated as well like as has been done by owners of Corvettes and GM F-bodies with manual transmissions that have the forced 1-to-4 upshift for CAFE.

Some error is inevitable. However, cars tend not to hit overhead signs except at the base.

I will say this: I am ALWAYS most wary around dump trucks as my former roommates brother was killed by a dump truck driver who kicked up a rock.

I also do tend to see dump trucks driving in general way more manically than any big rig towing trailers.
