I need a good outdoor cover for the impending hellstorm winter snow and rain, and have no idea what I need or what I should be looking for. There's no space in my garage at home and from what I've seen, I need a good priced/affordable cover that can survive the sun, rain, snow and I think it needs to be breathable as well? Oh, and it needs to fit my the 944 most importantly..
What do I do Oppo? Teach me something new tonight.
And if you're curious as to why I can't put it in the garage..
Because shit and no time to clean shit is why. -_-

Just use a tonne of plastic wrap.

1) Really clean the car well, and wax it before putting it under the cover.
2) Always roll the cover up as you take it off the car, do not just yank it off to the side.
3) Maybe get an "indoor" cover to put on the car first, and stick the outdoor cover over that. Always wear protection bro.
4) I don't cover my cars, so I can't help you much more than to say clean the damn garage.
5) If you're not going to be using the car for an extended amount of time, disconnect the battery, lock the car, and put the key somewhere really safe, but very obvious. Nothing sucks more than losing your keys when the car is under a cover in your own driveway.
6) Put extra air in the tires so you don't get flat spots. Nothing is worse than flat spots from a car just sitting.
7) Provided your driveway isn't like the parking lot where I work, think about putting the car up on jack stands. My work parking lot is really bad, and the jack stands sink a little. It's pretty bad.
8) Suck it up and get a name brand cover that will actually fit your car.
9) Clean the garage, and buy two carcoons. Stick each porsche in one. Take your favorite deck chair, and sit in the driveway admiring your collection every so often, while not scaring the neighbors.

before you put a cover on it, make sure you wash it and give it a wax.
personally, I'd clean the garage VS taking car of the car....take a bunch of the boxes and put them in the basement
a day or two is all it would take. id come down to help, but thunder bay is a bit of a drive/flighht, and I dont have my passport here...

How could you forget the duct tape?

NO

Are these the best affordable covers?

You get what you pay for. I spent 49 bucks on one from Walmart and it lasted one year before it started deteriorating and growing mold on it. A cheap one is worse than nothing at all in my opinion.

nonono. Tuck tape. Then it's waterproof.

Like this, but a 944.

I've actually found out that packing tape is pretty waterproof as well. As long as you apply it dry. It's held my TSS in for the past 6 months. Yes, I am a terrible vehicle owner. It's a Toyota, shit'll buff.

That wall of shit in the middle goes all the way to the back wall. I really don't want to spend $200-400 on a cover, but I might have to unless I can get some help cleaning out that garage. When I was a kid, we used to fit a fucking van in there along with the 911 and Harley. My parents have been hoarding for who knows how long now and this is the result.

grab a couple of your buddies and start pulling boxes out. Ask you parnts: do you need this in the next 6 months? No? in the trash.
You should have seen the state my garage was in last summer...it was bad. I pulled everything out (including at the time, 3 motorcycles, all of our tools and boxes and what not. power washed it, de greased it, painted it, put everything back in and was done in 11 hours.
granted that was a one car agare...but with a buddy or 2 (offer them some pizza) you should be able to knock this out in 5 hours, tops. You dont have to do any painting or what not.

1) Will do
2) Can do
3) Too much monies :(
4) I don't have the time or enough willing manpower to do it myself :(
5) Won't be used again until Probably May or April
6) Will also do
7) I don't understand..
8) Was planning on it
9) How much is that gonna cost??
![]() 10/29/2014 at 23:42 |

Well I've got no idea how much one needs to spend for one..

You're not serious..

Hopefully I can get some friends to help me out..
![]() 10/29/2014 at 23:44 |

Me either, I just know it's not 49 bucks from Walmart.

Hopefully I can enlist the help of friends and spend $20 on pizza rather than a couple $$$ on a cover.

Off topic but there is a beige 944 Turbo that has been sitting for about a year now. I'll try and get pics tomorrow.
![]() 10/29/2014 at 23:50 |

That would be the ideal thing if you've got a place to move the stuff to. Maybe you can move stuff over and to the front so you can squeeze the 944 in there. Maybe the two would mate on some cold winter night and you'd get a little 928 in the spring.
![]() 10/29/2014 at 23:50 |

that always helps. Offer pizza.
to do list:
take out boxes in middle
take out stuff along leftside wall
(if you want) organize shelves, you might gain some space
take out harley
roll out porsche. give said porsche (and yours a nice clean
roll in porsche #1. put on a cover is you have
roll in porsche #2. Tryy to keep as small a gap as possible between them (<6inchs)
if you want: put on cover for porsche #2
roll in harley
push back in the rest of the stuff you have. Before you put anything back in, look at it an see if its actually of any use (an old bike part? out. a almost dont bottle of car shampoo? out)
you will be amazed at how much space you can save
and its therapeutic. I know u've been kinda freaking out about school and what not lately, this will help distract you for a little bit.

Or a Cayman. Why can't they make a Cayman?
![]() 10/29/2014 at 23:51 |

That is most definitely on topic and I would love to see pictures. :)
I hope it isn't in too bad of shape?
![]() 10/29/2014 at 23:53 |

That would make more sense since one parent has it's motor in the front and the other in the back, certainly the offspring would have the engine in the middle.
![]() 10/29/2014 at 23:54 |
|
That's exactly like what I think I'll do.
![]() 10/29/2014 at 23:55 |

7) lifts the car off the ground, meaning the tires cannot get flat spots. Not an ideal option, but it can save the tires. Theoretically you could put the car on jack stands, and put the wheels in the garage. Good anti-theft option as well.
9) Expensive. Carcoons are great things for cars that don't get used often (or at all) because they keep constant airflow over the cars, as well as a protective bubble.
http://www.jcwhitney.com/car-covers/por…
Even if you bought two, you're not looking at much in the way of money, covers are not all that expensive. Any plans on doing a rust treatment on the bottom of the car?
![]() 10/29/2014 at 23:56 |

If you use enough, it will work. Maybe if you get that industrial stuff that they wrap pallets in.
![]() 10/29/2014 at 23:56 |

It is currently sitting at a mechanics shop but it has been in the same place for a year now. However, no rust that I can see (FL is good for something!) but there is a small dent on the front left fender. Also the same shop has 2 C4 vettes and a trans am that have just been sitting for years.
![]() 10/29/2014 at 23:58 |
|
Is that shop, just abandoned and dead? Wanna steal some cars for me? ;)
![]() 10/30/2014 at 00:00 |
|
Well both cars are rust-free underneath so they're alright there. I don't have enough lifts or jacks to lift them. I could theoretically create ramps for both out of wood and have them rest on top of the blocks..
What say you?
![]() 10/30/2014 at 00:00 |
|
:P
you shouldnt be able to open the doors on the 911 after you parked the 944 inside.
something like the 2 white lambos
(i'm sorry, i tried find one with Porsches in it but I couldn't :( )
![]() 10/30/2014 at 00:01 |

Don't cheap out, get a good quality cover. I got mine for 179 and it's supposed to be great for any type of weather. It's also multi layered so I feel better if it's hailing out (Which is common here).I can't exactly give you a good brand, I kind of had three options and I got the best one.
Make sure if you plan to keep it under for a long time, wash it first. When it snows or ices up, DO NOT take the cover off. Very bad idea. I put bungee cords going underneath to each side of the cover to protect it from flying away. The cover should stay on fine, but with the 80MPH winds I don't want to take any chances.

The shop is still going. This is an old picture but the vette is here. The Porsche is now parked where the Neon is and also they have a X1/9 (behind the S10)!

Yes. And both are RWD. :)

getting four new jack stands from a parts store will run you about $70 or so, if you were to do that. I wouldn't worry much about the 911, just the 944 if it's going to hibernate outside. I would actually remove the battery from the car, and keep it on a trickle charger whenever possible, so you can keep it fresh. Also, either run the tank down to nothing basically, or fill it up all the way and put fuel stabilizer in it. Gas will not keep for extended periods of time.
![]() 10/30/2014 at 00:07 |
|
1.) Throw shit out
2.) If you've got to have it, try to hang some of it off of the ceiling. Make racks.
3.) http://www.harborfreight.com/2-piece-1500-l… and get the 911 as close to the wall as you can. If you are careful you can get it over further and move the bike into the same bay (maybe).
You can store a car outside if you have to but I'd do whatever I could to avoid it.

I think I'll try to enlist the help of friends via pizza to clean the garage to fit one car as best as possible..
Wanna help? :P :(

Pay for my transportation and I'll be there! Whether that's a plane ticket or tires and battery. And maybe shocks and struts to, I don't want to imagine how my worn shocks and struts are on MI roads.

I have to do whatever I can to get that garage clean before first major snowfall. First minor snowfall is reportedly Friday afternoon..
If I can get the garage clean enough to store it indoors then everyone wins; if not, then I'll be a broke child for a while. :(
![]() 10/30/2014 at 00:13 |
|
You'll need new tires and a battery to come here? I thought you weren't that far away statewise..
![]() 10/30/2014 at 00:28 |
|
1. Get a big tarp from your store of choice.
2. Wrap said car.
3. Hold it together with bungee cords.
Cheap and effective.

My fronts are really worn and I have no idea when the current battery was put in. Judging from the occasional slow start, I should probably get to replacing it. I'm in North Texas, so MI is a decent trip! I have friends who did it and apparently it wasn't to bad, but still a long drive.
![]() 10/30/2014 at 00:33 |

ha, you can always put the boxes on top of the 944 after putting in the garage, amirite?!
/sarcasm
