It took about 55,000 miles, but as expected the window regulator clips on both left side windows are failing.
It's also due for a carbon clean.
And the clutch slips if I get into too much boost in 6th gear. Not a problem for now, but it won't be long until it starts to slip in every gear.
Good thing there is a great VW/Audi indy shop nearby.
On the plus side, zero electrical issues. But MK6 R's are built in Germany (not Mexico), so I wasn't anticipating any.
I still think this car is great fun and was well worth it...though with my driving habits (averaging 24k highway miles per year) I'm leaning towards selling in favor of a MK7 TDI Sportwagen, and getting a RWD fun car at some point later.

wow. You have a Gorf with 55k? My MkV R32 is lower mileage than I thought, and here I thought I'm driving the piss out of it. I have 56k on mine. Poor fella got impailed by a commercial truck's driveshaft, put a golfball size hole in the DSG. I've been without my car since July 11th. I'm tossing around the idea of selling mine to maybe get something a little more thrifty...but I need fun when I drive.

How much will the carbon clean cost if you pay a shop to do it?

Small diesel wagons doubleplus good.

I've seen the MK7 sportwagens over here (Germany) for a while now and I had a loaner MK7 Golf 4motion TDI and a regular FWD version for a couple weeks each. Very good looking cars and fun to toss around on the back roads. The new interior is loads better with the new emphasis on the driver and beats out my previous MK6 TDI Golf every day of the week. If I had a longer commute I would be looking into the MK7 Golf, although the Sportwagen is making a decent case as a family hauler replacement.

It depends on which service I go with. BG Induction Service and walnut shell blasting are the cheaper options...walnut blasting can be done yourself with some tools and supplies from harbor freight, but I don't have time to do that. The most expensive option is manually scrubbing all the valves and the valves and ports, and the only real cost is the labor...but it could take 4-6 hours.
Supposedly the BG Induction Service is very effective, doesn't take terribly long and costs in the $120-$200 range. I might give that a shot.

I believe all Mk6 Golfs were built in Germany, weren't they? I was under the impression that the Mk7 is the first to be produced in Mexico.
I'm a little suprised by the clutch going at this mileage. Is the it an expected repair at this mileage for an R or not durable enough from the factory?

Golf? My Jetta Sportwagen is part-Golf (the forward half) and the frame was built in Germany but everything was assembled in Mexico...

$100-200 wouldn't be bad at all! I hope that option works.
On a related note my 911 has almost as many miles on it as your car and I haven't noticed any wear yet. I've never owned such a solid car before. So I think your plan to get some sort of 997.2 in the future is a good one.
My only complaint with the 911 has nothing to do with wear - the stiff ride is starting to wear on me. I really wish I had PASM... I dunno if the roads are getting worse and worse in my area or if it's just because I'm getting older and more sensitive to stiff cars.
I test drove a Gallardo once and seemed to have a comfier ride than my 911. Everyone says the Gallardo is super stiff and uncomfortable but I think a PASM-less 997 might actually be stiffer.

Not sure on the Golfs, but I know the GTIs were built in Germany.
Clutch going bad that early is questionable as well....
![]() 10/29/2014 at 15:09 |

I'm running more than stock power, so it isn't surprising. Stage 2 guys will go through the stock clutch very quickly.

What's the deal with the "carbon clean"? Is that a VW reccomended service?
I've never heard of that. Could you just do an Italian Tune Up instead?
Also, that sounds a big early to be having clutch issues. Is your car chipped or modded otherwise? Have you been rough on it with high rpm launches?
![]() 10/29/2014 at 15:10 |

Good to know that it's a solid car!
And noted...when it's time, look for a 997.2 with PASM...
![]() 10/29/2014 at 15:13 |

Carbon clean is usually walnut shell blasting or BG Induction Service. Is not a recommended service, but eventually the carbon buildup issue inherent to direct injection engines it will cause misfiring and cold start issues. It can also affect mileage and performance. All direct injection engines have this issue.
An Italian Tune Up may help...don't know if anyone's done it on an FSI.
I'm running Stage 1+. Stage 2 guys go through the stock clutch pretty quickly. I never launch the car.

I think the sweet spot for you would be a 997.2 GTS. It ticks all the boxes:
1. Not as expensive as the GT3, but still a lot more rare than a C2S so it will hold its value better and maybe go up in value like the GT3 has been
2. It will be a more comfortable DD than the GT3
3. The back seats actually do come in handy sometimes
4. It's faster than the C2S
5. It looks awesome

I did some looking and the only Mk.6 Golf built in Mexico was the Sportwagon, which is called the Jetta sportwagon in the US so it only half counts.
![]() 10/29/2014 at 15:15 |

Yeah, I think the GT3 is a pipe dream. Their residual values are ridiculous. I would rather get a 997.1 Turbo, and there are quite a few manual cars...though honestly I don't really need that much ludicrous power, and I'd rather have RWD.
mm, yes, a GTS would be nice. Those have the fatter rear fenders too, right?
![]() 10/29/2014 at 15:15 |

Yeah, I looked it up and the Sportwagen is the only Mk. 6 Golf to be built in Mexico and being called the Jetta Sportwagen in the US I'll only half count it as a Golf.
![]() 10/29/2014 at 15:16 |

Gotcha, I wasn't aware you were running more power.
![]() 10/29/2014 at 15:18 |

Plus it would be easier to find a GTS that hasn't been tracked. GT3 owners might tell you that the car hasn't been tracked when it has been. But the GTS would still be great on the track if you wanted to take it out.
I think the rear fenders are the wider ones. Here is a GTS with a GT3 wing on it. Looks just like a GT3

:( *Womp womp* Oh well ;) Nothing has broken on it yet... other than what the body shop messed up! None of the OEM lights have even gone out yet :)
![]() 10/29/2014 at 15:23 |

Haha, I just bought a Golf built completely in Mexico and I wouldn't be inclined to worry about it.
![]() 10/29/2014 at 15:26 |

Yep, looks wider to me.
And, just ugh. GT3 wings belong only on GT3's...
![]() 10/29/2014 at 15:34 |

It's done well for 3.5 years and 79k miles... if I say so myself :)
![]() 10/29/2014 at 15:40 |
|
Yeah it looks whack to do that to the GTS
The only allowable reason to do it is if the car was being tracked a lot
![]() 10/29/2014 at 15:41 |

I also noticed that 997.1 Turbos are representing a pretty good value, and there seem to be a lot of 6-speeds available. It's the earlier car, but hey it has the Metzger engine and variable-geometry turbos.
![]() 10/29/2014 at 16:05 |
|
They are a damn good value. And they're not subject to the IMS issue like the 997.1 cars that aren't GT3s or Turbos are
I bet it sounds better than a 997.2 Turbo as well

Oh man. http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/…
SO NICE.
But I just can't bring myself to do it yet...
![]() 10/29/2014 at 16:44 |

Nice. It's got some aesthetic upgrades too.
That's a lot of car for the money

I'm a sucker for things like carbon fiber steering wheel bits. I think it's my inner ricer.
It also has a $4000+ set of forged HRE wheels..
![]() 10/29/2014 at 16:50 |
|
Haha. It doesn't look too rice to me. I like it - seems classy.
The wheels I could do without if they would discount the car. You can always get different wheels later.
I wonder how much my car is worth. This is the closest one I can find on AT. My car is a year newer but has 52K miles

![]() 10/29/2014 at 16:59 |

Sell the wheels, buy a cheap set of stockers ;) I do like those wheels, not preferred style but I'm not a fan of the stock 997.1 turbo wheels.
a base 997.2 Carrera is always my fallback plan. Oh darn :) Though now I need to be sure it has PASM. lol
![]() 10/29/2014 at 17:13 |

Base Carreras with PASM are rare, but they do exist.
Look how well the C2S is holding its value:

![]() 10/29/2014 at 17:16 |

Ouch! Yeah.
I do see a couple below 50k though. PASM is standard on C2S, right?
![]() 10/29/2014 at 17:19 |
|
Correct. PASM was a standard feature on the C2S. Only way I could see the car not having it is if someone custom ordered a C2S and asked for that feature to be omitted.

Damn, ok, I think this is pretty much perfect. http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/…
Edit: then I see the "structural damage" DOH!
![]() 10/29/2014 at 17:37 |

Damn the crashed cars!
That happens to me all the time. I see the perfect car then realize it's been in a bad accident

Have you read this? http://sharkwerks.com/porsche/porsch…
Really good 997.2 tuning guide.

No and thank you! I need to get the muffler bypass setup ASAP
I hate the stock exhaust setup. You can't hear the car!
![]() 10/30/2014 at 16:24 |

Yep, looks like a no brainer mod to me, with our without PSE.
![]() 10/30/2014 at 16:29 |

I need to do a bypass on the E90 as well
The M3 sounds better but the S65 is still too muffled
![]() 10/30/2014 at 16:48 |

I'm fairly sure that it's a little bit more expensive for an E9x M3. That sharkwerks bypass crossover pipe costs only $775.
Oh, did you see the link I posted to Oppo? It was the backcountry route though SD county I mentioned to you not long ago.
![]() 10/30/2014 at 19:59 |

Probably is. Longer exhaust on the M3
I did not, will find now
