Why don't they just get it over with and call it a D&B Drive? Because it looks like dick and balls. Came across this when learning about the Stirling engine used in the Swedish sub equipped with Air Independent Propulsion.
So all kidding aside, these AIP subs, is it the Stirling engine that propels them in silent mode? Didn't quite get that clear in the Foxtrot Alpha article.

Does that engine actually work? Something about having a sliding shaft through the lower piston doesn't sound like it'll hold compression worth a crap.
