I'm torn on this. On the one hand, it's a piece of history, and should be preserved. But on the other, the are plenty of examples in museums, it's probably too far gone to be of much use, either for display, or as a running example now. But where it is (at a Lancaster crash site in Scotland) it does serve as a poignant, and near-immovable, marker of the place where eight airmen lost their lives.
I've come across aircraft wreckage when hiking before, and it really makes you stop and think.

Never really gave it much thought, but Europe must be littered with military wreckage. Is it common to stumble upon things like this?

Well, anything accessible and of any value would have been removed so it wouldn't be an everyday occurrence, no.
Unexploded shells and bombs do sometimes turn up and unfortunately can still be dangerous.
